Beacon is a small town in upstate New York, located on the border of Albany and Saratoga. The population was 3,405 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Capital Region. Beacon has been inhabited by humans since prehistoric times. The first permanent settler in what is now Beacon was Nicholas de Champlain in 1624. He founded the Town of Albany, which became capital of New York after the English took over from the Dutch in 1664. In 1785, John Jay wrote a letter to the Continental Congress recommending that Albany be moved from New York to Philadelphia as its new capital because it had "more advantages for trade and commerce". In 1811, George Washington visited Beacon and pronounced it "the most favourably situated place I have ever seen for manufacturing tobacco", although he did not actual plant any tobacco there. In 1822, Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest built a home in what is now downtown Beacon using money he had saved up during his tenure as secretary of war under Andrew Jackson. After Forrest's death in 1835, his family sold Beacon land to build an additional house on Masonic Avenue near present-day Union Square Mall; this property became known as Forrest Park. For many years following Reconstruction (1868–1912), business enterprises were conducted mainly within one large block along Masonic Avenue called North Main Street: The First National Bank (now JPMorgan Chase), Masons' Hall (formerly North American Tobacco Company's main headquarters until 1984), several stores catering to lumber and agricultural interests such as Goudy's grocery store (owned until 1966 by Empire Gifts Corporation) and Post & Beam saddlesmith shop (founded 1865 by James Wetherald). On May 15th 1886 three brothers named Elias Howe started a bakery on Adams Boulevard west of Union Square Mall; their son-in-law ran their business until his death in 1951. The businesses around Freemason Avenue closed when Interstate 87 was built through town; today only Chambers Alley remains commercial activity with some development taking place nearby including an upcoming apartment complex known as 'The Lofts'. On November 8th 1922 Mayor Joseph Jastrow presented him with a plaque recognizing Mr Jastrow's role in helping start the local paper mill - later renamed 'The Beacon Journal'. On October 5th 1954 two soldiers working inside Oneida Lake while deployed overseas shot and killed six people – four civilians who were visiting Oneida Lake Municipal Airport for waterfowl hunting behind Fort Drum barracks then drove back home – when they stopped at a gas station east of Five Points Road just south of where Today’s Starbucks sits; this tragedy createdο one of history’s greatest rallying cries against gun control legislation before becoming something more mundane[1] Then-Mayor William Aldermen James Doyle(D)and Augustus Mills(R) convened an emergency meeting chaired by Mayor Doyle due to increasing public concern about security concerns brought about by unsubstantiated reports that troops stationed at Oneida Lake may have committed murder [2];during deliberations it emerged that state troopers patrolling adjacent Mohawk Valley could do more effective job apprehending criminals given their relationship with sheriff’s deputies stationed nearby…. On December 6th 1954 Acting Police Commissioner Donald Hickey recommended that no charges be filed against any troops perceived responsible for shooting civilians but instead all personnel involved should be reprimanded…. This recommendation led to heated debate between Aldermen Mills and Doyle over whether or not further action should be taken… ultimately no prosecutions were ever brought against any members of the military unit responsible for shootings
Beacon was a town in the Catskills region of New York City from 1776 to 1898. The present-day neighborhood of Beacon Hill was first settled in 1683 by Sir Edmund Andros, who named it after his home town of Beaconsfield, Hampshire, England. In 1776, the Continental Congress voted to establish a new state called New York out of parts of Pennsylvania and Virginia. The vote did not include Beacon County and as a result, the town had no say in whether it became part of the new state or not. However, since its establishment as an individual community, Beacon has seen an influx of English-speaking residents who continue to make their homes here today.
