Beacon was founded in 1795 by George Washington and his wife Martha. The town was named for the Beacon Hill lighthouse, which first stood in the town. In 1807, the town became a part of New York State. The first store in Beacon opened in 1812. In 1827, the first public school was open in the town. In 1828, the first hospital opened in Beacon. The first post office was established in Beacon on December 8, 1830. The population of Beacon reached 713 residents by 1840. By 1850, the population had increased to 1,600 residents. In 1861, Congress passed a bill creating a new state called New York out of parts of Pennsylvania and Delaware that were part of Maryland and Delaware respectively. As a result of this change, all of what is now Rhode Island and Massachusetts fell within New York’s boundaries – including Beacon! On October 10th of that year, President Abraham Lincoln signed into law an act admitting Beacon into New York as a city! On November 3rd 1870, Mayor John Atherton dedicated the new City Hall which still stands today. On May 25th 1893 when America lost its centennial anniversary two days after President McKinley died at Buffalo Niagara Falls; Mayor Atherton declared “Beacon will not be alone … [we] must remember our history and purpose” (Telegraph). This sentiment has continued to be echoed throughout our community ever since with every commemoration or special event related thereto like National Day/Vacation Rental Weekend or Independence Day/Beacon observance! Today we are proud to celebrate over 240 years of continuous growth and progress made by our beautiful community!

Beacon is a town located in the Towns of Beacon and Northbridge, within the town of Southbridge, in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–Southbridge Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers arrived in what is now Beacon on October 9, 1792 by boat from Albany. They were led by Elias Canning and spread out through present-day Oswego County to create a new land base for themselves and their families. The first settler named Isaac Porter built a small cabin onAugust 15th, 1793. Mr. Porter's wife bore him three children: one son named John who would serve as Mayor of Rochester in 1857; one daughter also named Sarah which would later become Mrs. George Washington Glidden; and one daughter who married Samuel Geary (1787-1860), an ironworker from Auburn who founded Geary's iron works at Lackawanna Falls about north east of downtown Rochester. In 1800 Indians burned down much of what are now downtown Rochester because they were angry over complaints made about hunting by white men on their reservation near Fort Erie across the river from where Beacon stands today! On July 12th 1828 two brothers by the name of Callender bought 2/3 interest in The Hermitage Farmstead from Abram Cox for $1 per acre (valued then at $27). On December 15th 1830 they sold it to Ebenezer Welles for $4 per acre ($40 total). Fearing that his own children might not be allowed to inherit if he did not sell it back he mortgaged it all back to Welles with 7 year notice given that he must either sell or refinancing immediately! He refinanced but never sold back though his land reverted back to Indian ownership after only 8 years !! . One can only imagine how pleased Ebenezer Welles must have been when he finally received full title back because clearly there had been some mistake somewhere along the way!!! One interesting note about this particular transaction is that despite having several mortgages etc., Ebenezer Welles actually paid off all but one!! This suggests that perhaps mortgage companies were more than happy to let such poor creditworthy individuals get into trouble again and again? Anyway, we'll come back to this topic momentarily... In 1836 Amos Beecher organized a group of Christian ministers together with Revs Solomon Stoddard and James Mott called "The Methodist Episcopal Church" which soon became known as "Beacon". Reverend Beecher moved his congregation westward into Otsego County before moving them permanently toNorthbridge in 1852 due to overcrowding inside the old Beacon church building! The geographic separation between Northbridge & Southbridge effectively ended municipal services provided by both towns until 1961 when Northbridge annexed Southbridge completely!!!!! So essentially even though both towns are still technically part of Buffalo Niagara City proper - legally speaking they are nothing more than separate villages – locals hereabouts refer to everything within easy walking distance as “Beacon” although no official documents or records exist documenting this fact….. There has never been any real attempt made whatsoever by either side – be it citizens or government officials –to try and resolve these jurisdictional issues otherwise known affectionately as “the well-kept secret”…….. However recent efforts have recently commenced including using social media platforms like Twitter & Instagram @BinghamtonNYC & # beaconontown

Beacon is a small town in the Hudson Valley, New York, United States. The population was 1,519 at the 2010 census. Beacon is located on the south bank of the river between Kingston and Poughkeepsie. It is bordered by South Nyack to the east, West Nyack to the north, and North Nyack to the west. The first settlers in what is now Beacon were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1626. In 1664, John Winthrop founded Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts and soon after sent his brother Samuel to found Beacon as a farming community on the southern tip of Manhattan Island. At first it was called simply "Bethlehem." In 1795, when Great Britain acquired New York from Spain during their war for independence, they changed its name to Beacon because King George III had given them this land as part of his grant of Ulster County (later Kings County). The town's current name comes from an act of Congress which granted it land adjacent to Peekskill Creek so that local farmers could raise cattle there and sell milk and other products along with eggs and hay into Albany County. The townspeople quickly built a schoolhouse and store around this site. They also constructed a few homes but most residents lived in rented cottages until 1807 when President James K. Polk ordered all public buildings be replaced with more permanent structures under orders from then-Secretary of State James K. Polk Sr.. The original three-story white clapboard School House still stands today - standing as one of only two examples remaining from early 19th century Beacon Village before large numbers of houses were erected throughout centraltowns across America during that time period for housing purposes alone; however even these are no longer habitable due largely to fire damage sustained over time especially since many years ago metal detectors have been installed onto all entrances leading into town... In 1848 some new families moved into what was then known as "Hillsborough" just northeast of downtown near where Old Post Road meets modern day Route 9W... These families soon started purchasing lots adjoining or within walking distance of their newly founded village forming what became known collectively as "The Hillborough Group". This group purchased additional lots over time giving rise eventually to Beaconshire Township which encompasses much of present day Beacon Falls Church neighborhood including much older buildings than those currently extant within Town limits! By 1870 about 95%of present day Beavercreek Twp./Beacon Falls Church was withinTown Limits! All except for about 3 blocks northwest corner bounded by Main Street/Route 9W & Park Ave./Old Post Rd./ served by bus line run by township government! By 1930 only about 5%of present day Beavercreek Twp./Beacon Falls Church remained inside Town Limits while almost all outside boundaries served by private bus lines!!! Today little remains outside limits save for some privately owned lotss close to main road
