The Buffalo Air National Guard is one of the most decorated air forces in the United States. The unit has received numerous awards and citations for its service, including three Distinguished Unit Citations (DUCs) and two Bronze Star Medals. The first group of military pilots to come to Buffalo were members of the 8th Aero Squadron, which was activated on July 16, 1912. The squadron operated out of a hangar on Elmira Avenue. On December 9, 1912, the 8th Aero Squadron's first victory was achieved when they destroyed a Germanaircraft over Niagara Falls. In 1916-1917, at the onset of World War I, the Buffalo Air National Guard served as part ofthe American Expeditionary Force (AEF). In total, the AEF flew over 1 million miles in support of Allied troops fighting in Europe. Among these veterans were members from the 7th Aero Squadron who helped form what would become known as "The Great White Fleet." After World War I ended in 1918, many active duty military personnel from New York City returned home to their hometowns and formed their own aviation units; however,Buffalo remained a strategic location for USAAF activity untilactivatedon October 14th 1946 by General Curtis LeMay as Headquarters Air Forces Western Hemisphere Command with sites located at Grand Island Naval Base and Seymour Johnson AFB Alaska.
