The history of the army in Canandaigua, New York goes back to the Revolutionary War. The town was named for Major General George Clinton, who fought in that war. In 1778, when the British were trying to take overNew York from the Americans, a group of patriots called "The Cobblers" volunteered to fight against them. They had no weapons and only wooden shoes to protect them from being captured or killed. They fought bravely but were eventually forced to retreat because they didn't have enough supplies. In 1812, Canandaigua became part of the United States and was renamed Albany. The first military unit stationed inCanandaigua was Hessian troops commanded by Colonel Johann Jacob Riemer. After the war ended, these troops helped keep order at local taverns and dances until 1825 when they were disbanded due to budget cuts. In 1830, a group of soldiers led by Captain James Fenton arrived inCanandaigua and began recruiting residents for an infantry regiment called "The Buffaloes." The regiment served in various campaigns during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). When peace came through,the regiment was disbanded but its members remained in Canandaigua and continued recruiting people for another infantry regiment called "The Virginians." This regiment also served during the American Civil War (1861-65). It was reactivated in 1865 and participated in Battle of Saratoga where it lost 8 out of 12 officers including captain James Fenton who died during that battle. After World War II ended on September 2nd 1945 there were no more military units stationed inCanandaigua so it reverted back to its original name: Albany/Athletic Club Village/Canandaigua

In 1814, as part of the Treaty of Ghent, the United States acquired control over much of Canada, including what is now Canandaigua. Canandaigua is a town in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Oneida County and the adjacent town of Canandaigua Falls. The Town of Canandaigua was organized on August 12, 1814 from part of the Village of Utica. At first it consisted only of a few rods along US Route 9 south to what is now the village line between Utica and Canandaigua Falls; but within two years had grown to include all that lies east and southeast of US Route 9 within its limits. The name "Canandaigua" derived from a word meaning "to increase." When first spelt by Lewis Cass in 1795, it meant nothing more than "a small stream flowing into Niagara River." In 1814, when Pleasant Hill Manor (later Northridge) was established in the northeast corner of Oneida County, General John Armstrong laid out a road through this part of town parallel to Lake Ontario which he named after his friend and patron saint, Saint Patrick. The first house on this new road was built by Ebenezer Richardson about 1815-17 near present day Waterloo Road and Elmira Road. A post office called Canandaigua was established in 1816 under General Armstrong's direction; but due to Indian hostilities it remained unoccupied for several years. In 1830 trustees appointed by inhabitants voted for erection of a schoolhouse which soon proved an essential element in community life; and before long local farmers were teaching their children at home with success! This early educational effort helped lay the foundation for future social progressivism as well as economic development! By 1840 some 400 people lived in Canandaiga Township - 60% rural farmers while 40% merchants or other traders! Although still largely Indian Owned until 1861 when white settlers began arrive en masse here following Ulysses S Grant's Emancipation Proclamation (see below), during this time many important changes were taking place both inside and outside Indian Country: In 1840 Major George Fenton erected one of America’s earliest flour mills on what is now Elmira Road just north-west of where today's Post Office stands; Albany Seamans also set up an gristmill hereabouts around this time too! By 1850 manufacturing had started arriving from Canada via Buffalo – principally hat making – with goods being shipped downriver past Dutch Point then across Niagara Falls onto barges then wagons hauled overland to market towns such as Morris Plains or Schenectady! With growing trade came increasing industry taxes which further strained local resources – particularly milling watermelons becoming very expensive hereabouts)! However despite these challenges canandaiga township successfully managed public education until1893 !!! During THIS time industrial growth continued unabated with new factories opening up at Kingstonville (northwest side) & Auburn (southwest side), among others!! Unfortunately starting about 1893 onwards there became increasing waves Of Irish migration hither….leading ultimately To The Great Depression !! Apostolic College opened its doors just south of Main Street Canal Bridge September 10th 1865 & rapidly grew into one OF America’s most prestigious institutions…..becoming Episcopalian Cathedral School !! After Union victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House April 6th 1865 (& propelling men like Daniel Webster Into Power!) President Abraham Lincoln signified American Reconstruction begin HERE…..installation Of Episcopal Bishop James Hickey took place…..Many famous Yankee Generals Are Graduated FROMEpiscopal Colleege—-FDR being ONE !!!!!!!!! Finally On October 15th 1957 THE last class graduated From Episcopal Church Academy……Now Samuel Adams Brewery operates Here!!!!!!!!
Canandaigua was first settled in 1776 by the Dutch and was renamed New Amsterdam in 1801 after the city of Amsterdam, Netherlands. The town served as a commercial center for the surrounding area until it became part of the United States in 1796. Canandaigua became a small village after that time and its population gradually shrunk over time to around 100 people by 1800. In 1814, the village was annexed by Syracuse and its population increased to about 250 people. It remained an agricultural community until around 1880 when it began to make strides as a manufacturing town. By 1912, Canandaigua had become one of the largest cities in upstate New York. In 1898, it amalgamated with nearby Rome to form the current city of Oswego.
