Canandaigua is a small town in upstate New York, about 30 miles northeast of Albany. The population was 4,545 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Onondaga County and the largest community within the city limits of Syracuse. The town was first settled in 1788 by Loyalists from Canada who had fled to America during the American Revolution. The early settlers were farmers and traders who came from Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. They built log cabins on high ground near where Canandaigua Lake now lies. The name "Canandaigua" is derived from an Iroquois word meaning "east side." The first store in Canandaigua opened in 1814, and trading began between the United States and Great Britain. A tannery was established in 1824, and a post office was founded in 1828. By 1830, Canandaigua had a population of 602 people. In 1830, James Smedley organized an agricultural society which became the nucleus for later civic organizations such as churches and schools. In 1834, Alexander Kelley bought land around what is now downtown Canandaigua for $2 per acre (about $40 per square mile). He built a millinery shop and village center on his property; today's Kelley Square is named after him. Starting out as a small settlement, Canandaiguat began to grow rapidly when interest rates went down throughout much of America during the 1830s due to low inflation rates caused by wars with France and Mexico that were ending at that time. By 1840, there were 1,000 people living here with some 40 businesses including 8 tanneries/factory systems; 5 blacksmiths/ armouries; 3 hams/lumberyards; 2 banks/post offices; 2 breweries/wine cellars; 1 physician; 1 school teacher). In 1840-41 John Purdy moved his family to this area from Geddesburgh (now North Syracuse) because he found it too hot there for farming but he also wanted access to Cornell University which then existed only as a private institution not open to everyone like it does now! With increased trade opportunities coming into America through new technologies being developed such as steamboats on inland waterways (the Erie Canal), mills started needing workers quickly so Purdy set up shop driving wagons loaded with goods down State Street past our current library building back then! After working 10 hours start to finish their day they would retire home for dinner before going back out again all night! This years bicentennial celebration we are honoring many pioneers who helped shape our community including Mr John Purdy himself!

George Clinton with one vote against that of Kingston; it included all present territory east of Seneca Lake and north of Mohawk Creek inclusive In 1846, Canandaigua became part of the new State of New York following its creation from parts of five other states plus Vermont and Maine. In that year it had a population estimated at 5,000 but by 1860 it had grown to 10,000 and reached a peak during the American Civil War when over 35% of its residents volunteered for service (the highest percentage ever recorded for any city or town in NY). After the war ended Canandaigua continued to grow as an agricultural center with prosperous businesses such as canning factories and breweries developing around its central square which remains today one of its most popular tourist destinations
