Cohoes is a small town in upstate New York, located on the southern border of Westchester County. It was founded by the Dutch in 1624 and became known as the "Dutchess County Town" because its first settler, Pieter Dutchess, married an English woman. The name "Cohoes" is derived from a Mohawk word meaning "a place where there are many cedar trees." The Cohoes Creek valley was once home to more than 200 farms and villages that collectively cultivated over 2 million acres of land. Today, only a few scattered homes remain and the rest has been demolished to make way for new development. In 1907, Cohoes voters elected their first mayor, John Fenton. He served until his death in 1938. Mayor Fenton was responsible for such initiatives as creating Cohoes Park and expanding the school system to include grades K-12. In 1955, he helped found Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY and served as its first president from 1959 until his death in 1966. During World War II, Cohoes played an important role in the defense of Ithaca against Japanese forces. More than 1,500 local men were mobilized for service within the military and many took part in Operation crossesroads which liberated Hiroshima on August 6th 1945; one week after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. 2 years later (1948), when America lost her war with Japan following atomic bombing of Hiroshima we welcomed American soldiers back into our community with open arms–the town had never seen anything like it! This largest influx of foreigners ever to live permanently within Uptown Manhattan during this time period caused some tension but ultimately led to stability as most people reverted back to their native culture once they got used to living under American rule again!
