Cohoes, New York has a rich military history dating back to the Revolutionary War. Many of the artifacts that have been preserved in the Cohoes Historical Museum date back to this time. One of the most famous items from this time is the USS Constitution Flagstaff, which was donated to the museum by General James Wolfe in 1795. This flagstaff is still used today as a part of display at the museum. Another valuable relic from this time is a sword given to Captain John Smith by George Washington. This sword is now on display at Mount Vernon National Cemetery in Virginia. It is also one of only two swords ever given away as gifts during the Revolutionary War. The other was given to King George III by Continental Congress in 1775. The first military installation in Cohoes was Fort Niagara, which was built in 1784 for Major-General Nicholas Howe and his army during the French and Indian War. The fort served various purposes until it burned down in 1814. After that, Fort Niagara became an arsenal for artillery and cavalry training until it finally closed down in 1839. In 1824, Colonel Solomon Willard donated land near Cohoes for what would become Fort William Henry, later named after Governor Tryon’s wife Eliza Williams Willard (1801-1887). The willard familyowned property passed through many hands before it finally came into possession of the State of New York via purchase by Colmenary David McCloskey (1902-1981) on behalf of his son David Noyes McCloskey (1941-2006). As part of their donation process, Colonel Willard had prepared sketches showing how he wanted his fort structure designed and included plans for an observatory and barracks along with a jail and other buildings for soldiers stationed at Fort William Henry. These plans were never executed due to budget constraints but are now on display at Holy Cross Episcopal Church adjacent toFort William Henry Museum within walking distance from Old Dutch Village District Park across First Avenue from Post Office Building.) In addition, another gift from Colonel Willard was land east of present day Main Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Street where he constructed Camp Chase which housed troops during World War I as well as continued use as an armory afterwards In 1949, Camp Chase came under control of United States Army Air Forces Gunnery School when it reopened following World War II; now known as Wright Patterson Air Force Base

The name "Cohoes" is derived from the Mohawk word "khoi-nawa," meaning "place where two rivers intersect." The community's first settler was Peter DeWitt in 1772 and its last was Cesar Chavez in 1951. The town of Cohoes was organized on February 15, 1837, by a group of men who were looking for land to purchase near Rochester. They met at the home of Dr. John Lyon and formed a committee to choose a site for their town. On March 8th they voted to name their new town after General George Washington and his aide-de-camp Colonel David Hunter (1748–1826). Cohoes began as a small village with just over 100 residents in 1840. By 1850 it had grown to 1,200 people and by 1870 it had reached 3,000 people. In 1887 there were only 12 businesses in Cohoes and by 1920 there were more than 50 businesses. By 1930 there were over 500 businesses in Cohoes and by 1940 that number had increased to 1,500 businesses! In 1941 President Franklin D Roosevelt visited Cohoes for dinner and during his visit he dedicated part of Rockland Lake which now forms the border between Cohoes and North Tonawanda Township
