The National Guard of New York was first organized on November 15, 1792, as a militia to provide backup for the Continental Army during the Saratoga Campaign. The organization continued to grow and evolve over time, becoming an all-volunteer force by 1802. Cohoes, New York is a small town in upstate New York that was once the largest settlement on Long Island. It is located on the southern tip of the island, about 25 miles northeast of midtown Manhattan. The town was founded by Dutch colonists in 1624 and became part of the United States in 1783. Cohoes was originally called Nieuw Amersfoort (New Amsterdam) because it was one of the first settlements in what would become New York City. The town's name comes from a Native American word meaning "peninsula." The original settlers were farmers who arrived from Holland around 1624 to land that had been given to them by explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano. In 1627, they named their new village after Cornelius van der Schyver, Governor of West India Company fort Amsterdam at Staten Island. By 1630, Cohoes' population had reached 100 people and it began developing into a small trading post with basic amenities such as a school and church. However, economic development did not begin until after John Law's invasion of Long Island in 1765 created an opening for British trade on the eastern coast of America. This led to increased immigration to Cohoes due to opportunities for wages generated by British colonial lands outside of New Netherland. In 1815, Cohoes became part of Ontario County when northernmost Kings County was split off from Queens County. As only 2% of Ontarians were actually resident within the Town limits (and only 1% owning any land), there wasn't much impetus for growth beyond services provided by its few residents or local transportation connections available from rural areas closer to Toronto or Buffalo which lay almost 400 miles away across Lake Erie and more than 1,000 miles away from major urban centers like New York City proper! Nevertheless, over time many new businesses sprouted up around the core shopping district known as "The Commons" including several banks (Bank Street Exchange Bank & Trust Co., First National Bank & Trust Co.), two grocery stores (Jenny’s General Store and Gertrude Stein’s Bakery), three newspaper outlets - one being Times Union Press - several doctor offices/hospitals/libraries/a play ground/cottage (the first ever built in this area) as well as various other businesses catering primarily to residents within walking distance along either Broadwalk or Main Streets including seven beauty salons! With so many businesses active and generating economic activity within easy reach throughout most days during peak tourist season there must have been something special about Cohoes attracted these early settlers! 2 decades later things had begun to change however when local politics turned increasingly partisan with Albany becoming polarized between Tory-controlled Legislative Assembly from northward while Tory Mayor George Tyndall controlled downtown business districts southward; political tensions boiled over into open warfare leading eventually ultimately to clan violence erupting throughout late 19th century culminating finally with establishmentinofCohoeVillage Board effective January 1st 1915 followinginputofCommissionerOfPoliceDanielFenton!)
