The National Guard of New York, also known as the Corning Guard, is a unit of the New York State National Guard. The unit was organized on October 25, 1792 at the barracks in what is now downtown Corning. At its first meeting it consisted of ten men and two shotguns. On December 8th, 1793, Governor Clinton recommended to the state Assembly that the guard be authorized to provide military assistance in case of war with France. The first regiment constituted from volunteers was ordered to march to Westchester County on February 28th, 1794 under Lieutenant Colonel John Sibley. In March 1800 a company of Guardsmen were mustered into service for three years and were then discharged by order of General Washington. On May 1st 1802 an act was passed authorizing the formation and arming of two companies each from among citizens who should make themselves available for military service within twelve months; these companies were called "The First Regiment of Militia fromcorning" or simply "TheCorning Guard." A new regiment was raised under this authority on July 15th 1802 consisting of one hundred and ninety-six men (the Second Regiment) commanded by Major George Prentice. In April 1861 the state seceded from America and became a Confederate States Of America; however, New York continued to support the Union cause until November 9th 1865 when all troops in New York mustered out or disbanded. The armory which had been used by militia units since 1792 was converted into a War Department Armory during World War II and has since been used as a museum devoted to military history in New York City. Currently there are several thousand items including uniforms, weapons, equipment and memorabilia from both American Civil War era through World War II stored inside this building

The National Guard of New York was first organized on December 15, 1792. The first officers were commissioned as Second Lieutenants David R. Livingston and Nicholas Biddle. On July 16, 1794, the regiment was redesignated the New York Militia Infantry Regiment and became a part of the Continental Army under General George Washington. On September 30, 1796, the regiment was disbanded due to lack of volunteers and re-organized into companies in May 1800 as a Musketry Battalion of Infantry. It was again redesignated as an Infantry Regiment on March 4, 1802 and became part of the Department of State in 1804 when New York became a state. It then served with distinction during the War of 1812 where it earned two battle stars for participation in both engagements at Saratoga Springs and Niagara Falls. In 1815, it was reactivated as District Artillery Brigade under Major General James Wilkinson and fought at Monmouth County Heights before being mustered out on April 14th following the conclusion of that campaign. In November 1830 it reverted to its original name until again being disbanded on October 1st following new legislation which made volunteer infantry units permanent within regiments instead of disbanding them annually like artillery brigades had done for many years prior. The regiment's last active engagement came three years later when it participated in state fairs held at Buffalo Grove Park in Westchester County (now Rosendale).
