The first unit to arrive at the airport was the 351st Bombardment Squadron. The squadron was equipped with B-1700s and began its training in 1942. In 1946, the Air Force activated Headquarters Ninth Air Forces and moved from Dayton to Cortland as part of this organization’s reorganization followingWorld War II. A year later, Headquarters Ninth Air Forces moved again when it became Headquarters USAF (Air Combat Command) and Center for Global Strike Operations (CGCO). The First Tactical Fighter Wing (1FW) arrived at the airport in 1948, followed by Second Tactical Fighter Wing (2TFC) in 1951. Since then, Cortland has been an important location for USAF activity across many different realms of operation including air defense; military intelligence; bombardment; strategic air forces; special operations forces; nuclear weapons research and development; global strike capabilities; joint service command post locations aroundthe world [including both active duty installations]….. The 1FW has played a significant role in providing F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter aircraft for Operation Iraqi Freedom – which started on April 10th 2003 – as well as providing close air support for ground troops during Operation Enduring Freedom – which started on December 16th 2001………………….Today I am here at 2 FW welcoming home our newest member of our team:KC-135 Stratotanker!
Cortland, New York is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. The population was 1,684 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Utica-Rome, NY-NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Cortland was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it for his friend and patron saint, Saint Christopher. Cortland was originally part of the Kingdom of Naples and then of Sicily before becoming a United States territory in 1801. The village had no hospital until 1885 when an addition to the local insane asylum was built on High Street. As with most small towns in this area, there were few opportunities for education or advancement for those working here until after World War II when large numbers of immigrants arrived and opened businesses such as grocery stores, meat markets, gas stations and other services that have continued today. In recent years there has been growth in tourism as well as real estate development which has caused many people to move into the town over time including artists and musicians who continue to use its location as a studio or rehearsal space. Today’s community is home to a variety of cultures such as Italian (the largest minority group), Greeks (largely from America), Irish (makers of their own whisky), Germans (based on Clinton County) and Poles (mainly from Kalisz). There are also sizable numbers of Latinos who come from Mexico City or El Paso TX looking for work in agriculture or construction but find little opportunity here due to closed borders between New York State and Mexico. The economy depends heavily on agriculture although some manufacturing exists; among these are automobiles made by Ford Motor Company outside Syracuse; chemicals found near Utica; components for Boeing 747 airliners manufactured at Long Island’s North Shore facility; textiles produced by Wegmans store chains throughout the Mohawk Valley; trucking services provided by Carrier Corporation’s Utica plants; agricultural products grown by dairy farmers around Lake Ontario; theatrical productions staged at five venues located within easy reach including one located just outside town limits where you can purchase tickets online or buy them face value at convenience stores across New York state while still staying within legal bounds

One of the first air forces to be formed in America was the National Guard Academy (NGA) in 1892. It was followed by the United States Air Service (USAS) on July 14, 1907. On December 15th, 1912, President Woodrow Wilson signed into law creation of both services as one unified military organization under his Department of Defense. This marked an important milestone in American Aviation History; since then USAS and NGA have operated as separate services but share common aircraft and facilities. Today’s USAF traces its origins back to just 101 days after America entered World War I when General James “Jimmy” Doolittle organized a P-17 fighter squadron at Randolph AFB TX for use against German U-boats off California beaches. Over time USAF has become an incredibly diverse organization with more than 60 different Wings/ Divisions/ Groups across all combat branches which serve our nation 24/7/365 365 days/year!

Cortland, a town in the Hudson Valley of New York, was first settled by Germans in 1795. In 1814, it became a part of the United States of America. The population of Cortland increased rapidly after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, and by 1830 its population had reached 10,000. After years of growth and development, Cortland saw its peak during the late 19th century when it became one of the most industrialized towns in New York. However, since World War II its economy have been negligible due to lack of industry and transportation resources. Today Cortland is a small farming community with a few thousand residents.
Cortland was founded in 1796 by George Clinton. The town was named for the prominent local landowner, Cornelius Cortlandt. The first school in Cortland was built in 1812. In 1814, the state of New York granted a charter to the college at Cortland which became known as Colgate University. In 1850, the college opened its doors to women and in 1865 it became a co-educational institution. In 1898, Colgate University purchased land on what is today Elmira Road in downtown Cortland and began construction of what would become the Payne School of Business Administration. The Payne School merged with Colgate University in 2006 and became part of Harvey Mudd College.
