A second regiment of the New York Volunteer Infantry was organized in Cortland on December 14, 1827. The regiment served until it disbanded on July 9, 1830. On November 3, 1830, a third regiment of the New York Volunteer Infantry was organized in Cortland and served until it disbanded on November 10, 1830.
Cortland is a town in the Finger Lakes region of New York, United States. The population was 12,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse-New Rochelle, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cortland was first settled by Dutch and Italian colonists in 1664. The name "Cortland" originated from an ancient Indian word meaning "fortress." The town was incorporated as a village on April 15, 1825 and became a town on December 13, 1828. The original courthouse building still stands today and is used as the administrative offices for the Town of Cortland. The current library building was built in 1893 and has been used as the municipal office for Cortland since 1912. The history of Cortland goes back to 1664 when European settlers arrived in what is now Cortland County. They founded a small village called Fort Orange near present-day Utica which they named after their Spanish colonel who had helped lead them there during the Dutch Revolution of 1660-1665. Over time, other European families also came to live in this area including Poles and Irishmen who made their homes here until well into the 19th century. In 1825, village residents voted to become a town under rules set forth by New York State Legislature at that time. This decision signaled an important change for this rural community which had typically relied upon agriculture for its economy – one that would see numerous businesses opened up throughout downtown Cortland over ensuing decades as industry boomed around Buffalo and Albany across the state line thanks to transportation improvements brought about by American Civil War General Ulysses S Grant (1822-1885). In addition to burgeoning business development, another key factor responsible for overall growth during this period were improved school infrastructure developments spearheaded by then-Mayor John Fenton along with Superintendent Amos Hillman; both men working together soon after becoming head teachers at nearby Haverford College (now Haverford University). As new arrivals poured into cortLAND during these years it quickly became apparent that there were serious gaps in education opportunities available right here within our quaint little town! So soon thereafter Mayor Fenton reached out to superintendent Hillman with his request for assistance filling these educational needs! Together they formulated what would become known as “The System” – an innovative system whereby students attending local schools could continue their learning even after leaving home via day or evening classes offered through various high school districts located all across Upstate New York! This groundbreaking program quickly proved successful and continues today as one of our most cherished aspects of ourTown’s culture & heritage! During those early years many talented individuals such as future Congressman George Wuerl (1913-2000) learned valuable skills while studying at Haverford College before moving on onto more illustrious careers! Today we continue to receive top quality education here thanks not only to The System but alsoto many dedicated volunteers who help make it possible! A recent example of how hardworking citizens from every corner of our great Town have contributed over the years can be found right HERE inside our beloved library where everyday countless students come & learn something new from some worldamous author or illustrator!!!
