Depew is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 6,362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Erie County. The name Depew derives from Depeaux's Purchase, which was made in 1788 by Pierre-Jean de La Salle and René-Nicolas de Champlain. The first settler in what is now Depew was Nicholas de Champlain who arrived on July 4th, 1686 with his family and their belongings from Acadie (now Nova Scotia). They built a log cabin near present day Elmira and named it "Depeaux". In 1788 an act of Congress granted them all of the land between Buffalo Bayou and Seneca Lake as part of the Province of Ontario. In 1813, after Niagara Falls had been destroyed by a storm, General Andrew Johnson ordered Major Timothy Pickering to build Fort Niagara at the confluence of the Niagara River and Seneca Lake. After Pickering's death in 1815, Robert Haldimand succeeded him as commander at Fort Niagara. On April 20th, 1817 Brigadier General Isaac Brock relieved Haldimand and began construction of what became known as Brock Road while also fortifying nearby Fort Erie with artillery batteries. Depew, New York is a small town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 1,581 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was settled in 1827 by John and Martha Depew, who named it for their father-in-law, De Witt Clinton Depew. In 1830 the village had a population of 350. In 1834 the Post Road from Niagara Falls to Buffalo was built; this road gaveDepew its name and first appearance in town papers. The surrounding forest land was surveyed and sold to prominent citizens of Buffalo for $1 an acre in 1840; this allowed development of depews main commercial district near the new post office building on Main Street which opened in 1843. In 1847 the Village Court House relocated from where it previously stood to what is now First Avenue South when that street became available through donation by Mrs. Esther Witherspoon (the widow of Captain Nicholas Atherton). The original court house still stands today as a museum within walking distance of depews village square! During World War II many Depews participated in manufacturing munitions such as planes and tanks at nearby Lackawanna Arsenal; these products were produced under licence by other companies until 1945 when all manufacturing stopped due to restrictions placed on American munitions production during World War II by then-President Franklin D Roosevelt due to his concerns about potential atomic warfare between America and Nazi Germany. After the war many residents returned home but some continue living there year round because no other community offers similar amenities including healthcare or education opportunities like those found elsewhere within New York City or Buffalo metropolitan area! Since 2000 much has been done to improve infrastructure such as sidewalks, drainage systems and recreational facilities around depews square; this includes renovation of several churches located within walking distance along with new buildings dedicated specifically to arts and culture!
