The yards produced vessels for both American and British navies. In World War II, the yard built warships for the Allied forces. The yard is now closed, but its legacy remains in Navy ships and sailors who have worked there.
Depew, New York is a small town in Canandaigua County, New York, United States. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for General Anthony Depew and his wife Martha (née Howell). General Depew fought in the American Revolution as a volunteer and member of the Mohawk nation. He died at Saratoga Springs, New York on October 8, 1787. His widow married Colonel George Washington on November 25, 1785. Captain Nathaniel Greene served under Washington during the war and moved to depew in 1796 when he became commander of Fort Niagara. Greene's descendants still live there today. In 1815 an act of Congress created a township in Canandaigua County with two wards: one for farmers and another for mechanics and tradesmen; but this ordinance never came into force because it was repealed by another act that same year. In 1824 an act was passed providing for the erection of a courthouse; but no action resulted from its passage until 1829 when an act providing for building roads through the town was passed overwhelmingly by both houses of Congress and signed by President James Kappasliny I (). The first courthouse was built on Main Street between Oneida Avenue and Pearl Street in 1830-31 (). It burned down in 1832 while being used as a jail after being caught fire from within while being used as storage space. The second courthouse (built on State Road 2 near what is now Park Avenue) opened in 1840-41 (). It also burned down but was replaced by a third courthouse (now known as First Congregational Church) which opened in 1850-51 (). This courthouse served as the seat of government until 1955 when Buffalo had its own county government The current depot serving local freight service located at 501 S Elmira Road dates back to 1896 when it replaced an earlier depot which had been destroyed by fire several years earlier According to the 2000 US Census there were 3,746 people residing in Depew village including 1 black person, 0 Native Americans or Algonquin Indians living off tribal land, 5% Asians or Pacific Islanders living off tribal land & 95% white people according to self reporting
