Dobbs Ferry was a small hamlet located in the town of Rockville Centre, New York, United States. It was part of the Town of Dobbs Ferry and the villages of Loudon, Jericho and Westfield. The hamlet ceased to exist on July 1, 1846 when it merged with neighboring Loudon to form the new village of Rockville Centre. The first record of Dobbs Ferry is from 1624 when John Dobbs purchased land here from the Dutch. In 1764, General James Wolfe marched his army through this area and passed by near where present-day Route 9 connects with Interstate 95. On October 25, 1796 during the American Revolutionary War, George Washington arrived at what is now known as Mount Vernon while marching his army through this area; he had been traveling down route 9 from Kingston upon Lake Ontario via Dobbs Ferry. In 1847, Henry Stone built a sawmill in what is now called Stone Mill Road which became an important commercial center for eastern New York due to its proximity to Oneonta and Utica. The population of Dobbs Ferry peaked at 100 people in 1870 but decreased steadily until it reached its low point around 1910 with only 15 people living there. A post office was established at Dobbs Ferry on October 11, 1847 and remained open until May 2nd 1949 when it was closed due to lack of mail shipments (the last mail being sent from Rockville Centre on April 6th). On July 1st 1906, the merger between Loudon Village and Westfield Township resulted in the creation of Dobbs Ferry Borough which lasted until 1931 when all towns within Rockville Centre were consolidated into one municipality under the name “Rockville Centre”! After years of discussion among various local officials about whether or not to make Dobbs Ferry an official borough within our community we finally did so on December 12th 1931! This marks an important milestone for our town as we continue our journey towards becoming a vibrant community that celebrates its cultural diversity!
Dobbs Ferry was a small town in the Catskills region of Upstate New York, located on the southern bank of the Hudson River. The area now includes the village of Dobbs Ferry, and what was once the hamlet of Westfield is now part of Amherst. Dobbs Ferry's post office operated from 1836 to 1865. The original settlers at Dobbs Ferry were Englishmen who arrived in 1788 as refugees from Pennsylvania during King George III's American Revolution. They established themselves along the riverbank, building ferryboats and trading with Native Americans. By 1800, they had outgrown their original farmstead and built a larger complex near present-day Dobbs Ferry that included a store, inn, and home for several generations of families. In 1836, John A. Macdonald became acting Postmaster General following James Ketchum's resignation; he ordered an investigation into postal service in upstate New York due to widespread corruption among local officials. After finding no evidence of wrongdoing, Macdonald announced his intention to continue using provincial mail services; however, he changed his mind after learning about Dobbs Ferry's history. In 1860, John A. Stephenson became acting Postmaster General after James Ketchum's death; he ordered construction of new ferry boats based on designs by Scottish engineer Alexander Calder and began operation of the first boat on December 16th that year. The ferries transported passengers and goods between Hoboken and Albany/Schenectady through the narrowested straits between Manhattan Island and Staten Island until 1938 when Interstate 95 opened up these straits allowing buses to travel directly from I-95 to Oyster Bay without stopping at either New Jersey or Brooklyn; thus ending what was once one way transportation across both sides of the Hudson River
