Dobbs Ferry is a small town in upstate New York, located on the south shore of Long Island just east of the mouth of the Raritan River. The population was 1,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Adirondack Park region. Dobbs Ferry is named after General James Dobson, who fought in the American Revolution and became a U.S. Senator from New York. The first settlers in Dobbs Ferry were Quakers who arrived in 1777 and soon began to build a settlement around their Meeting House (now known as First Presbyterian Church). By 1800, there were about 60 people living here. These early colonists were farmers and fishermen, but they also started to build stores and roads to help connect their community with other parts of New York State. In 1831, when Cornelius Vanderbilt bought some land near where Dobbs Ferry now stands, he decided to develop it into a commercial center for his new line of steamboats shipping goods up and down the Hudson River. The town reached its first peak during this time; by 1851 it had over 100 residents and was briefly called "Vanderbilt's Folly". But things changed starting in 1855 when railroad construction began through nearby Ithaca; within five years Dobbs Ferry had lost most of its business thanks to increased rail travel times and competition from faster boats operating out of Ithaca or Albany. With increasing economic hardship came an exodus of many local residents – by 1870 only about 50 people remained in town – with many moving away for better opportunities elsewhere on Long Island or even across America altogether. In 1916–17 Mayor John Hynes directed efforts to re-open the closed Atlantic & Pacific Railroad crossing at nearby Union Point so that more goods could be transported into town from points northward; this helped revive some activity in downtown Dobbs Ferry once again though not enough to save it from total abandonment by 1930s events including then-rural High School students starting fires inside abandoned stores during summer break (a practice still common today). By then much of what remains today due largely to natural disasters such as hurricanes (euphemistically called "reef erosion") had been destroyed or displaced most residents: only a few scattered buildings remain standing above water along both sides of Main Street which now forms one side street leading into Dutch Hollow reservoir as well as two old homes remaining on either side of Route 9A off Dutch Hollow Road between Old Bridge Rd./Route 9A & Peconic Bay Rd./Dutch Hollow Lake Rd., approximately ½ mile west northwest corner thereof

Dobbs Ferry was a small village located in Ulster County, New York, United States. The town of Dobbs Ferry was incorporated on July 1, 1825 and the village of Dobbs Ferry itself was founded on October 11, 1827. The name is thought to reflect General Nathan Goble's famous victory over the British at the Battle of Princeton in 1778. Dobbs Ferry first emerged as a logging community in the late 1800s. In 1902, Pabst Brewing Co. began brewing beer here and it remains one of the company's most popular brands worldwide today. In 1969, American Electric Power created Dobbs Ferry Generating Station here to supply electricity to nearby towns and villages. A year later, American Electric Power replaced its original generating station with a more powerful plant that produced now 830 megawatts (MW) of power. The history of Dobbs Ferry goes back even further than this - settlers arrived here beginning in 1624 when Thomas Soome established himself along the banks of what is now Dunkirk Creek. At first, these early colonists were primarily farmers and traders; however, by 1700 they had developed into a large fur-trade community which prospered due to its access to trade routes through present-day Canada and Penetanguishene Bay. Over time, agriculture became an important aspect of their lives as well - during brood years (between pregnancies) women would provide milk for their families while also working in nearby farms orchards or picking fruit from trees near the creek banks; during non-brood years (between pregnancies), they engaged in other activities such as spinning straw into yarn or weaving baskets out of rushes or willows provided by friends or family members). Ultimately though, it was their agricultural base that sustained them throughout many difficult times - after all, without land there could be no crops to sell and no income from which to pay taxes! In 1825 however things changed when John Tompkins moved his family from Newtown Square upriver towards what is now Scotia Beach; within three years Tompkins had erected his own tavern/gristmill on what is today known as Main Street (the current site where Pabst Brewing Company once stood). This expanding business soon proved too much for John's wife Sarah who decided she wanted children rather than continue working long hours at home - so together they set about finding another way to bring some stability into their lives by forming a legal partnership under the name Soome & Morin Agency; this venture lasted until Sarah gave birth prematurely two months later which led her husband to dissolve it soon afterwards due to financial difficulties caused by his wife's pregnancy alone! Dobbs Ferry was a small hamlet on the south bank of the Hudson River in upstate New York, located about 12 miles (19 km) northeast of Kingston, New York. The community was first settled in 1795 by settlers from Ulster County and soon developed into a small village with a single store and two or three homes. By 1825, Dobbs Ferry had grown to include a few dozen residents and six stores. In 1848, the village became part of the newly created Town of Kingston. Even after becoming part of the larger town, Dobbs Ferry continued to be an important local center, playing an important role in civic life and helping to build infrastructure such as roads and bridges. In 1960, however, following the creation of Kingsport-on-Hudson as a separate townsite within the new city of Buffalo, Dobbs Ferry lost its status as an important local center and declined rapidly in population. Today it remains little more than a rural ghost town with no real economic vitality.
