Dunkirk was a strategic location during World War II when the United Kingdom and France were fighting against Nazi Germany. The town was located on the north coast of Dunkirk, in southern France, between the Belgian border and the Mediterranean Sea. During World War II, military forces were deployed to Dunkirk to help evacuate Allied troops from Europe. Many soldiers and civilians were killed or injured in action as result of the war. Dunkirk is a small town in the town of Westchester, New York, United States. It is located on the southern bank of the Hudson River and straddles the border of Westchester County and Putnam County. The population was 1,011 at the 2010 census. Dunkirk was named after British naval vessel HMS Dunkirk which arrived off the Dutch coast in 1915 with shells that had been salvaged from World War I warships sunk by Germany. In 1809, John Sellars purchased land at present-day Dunkirk from George Washington Smith and others for $2,000. In 1810, Sellars erected a white house on his farmstead; it remained standing until 1840 when it burned down due to an accidental fire. On July 14th, 1916 (the day after America's entry into World War I), large numbers of German soldiers disembarked at Dunkirk along with supplies for their army located nearby at Ploesti on Romania's Black Sea coast. The small town quickly became overwhelmed with refugees who were either picked up by boats or taken by train to various locations in New York State including Schenectady and Yonkers. By early August 1916 some 350 people had live in Dunkirk while another 2200 refugees resided within walking distance of the local post office where they received food, water and medical attention as well as information about evacuation routes should hostilities break out between Germany and Austria-Hungary. However, no actual fighting took place due to lack of volunteers from both sides but rather a lull in hostilities that allowed more ships carrying munitions to arrive Alongside also resulted an increase in crime rates as Nazi officers were given free rein to terrorize civilians whileTIhey looted businesses and homes). The Army began evacuating villagers on August 22nd with buses taking those over whom did not have cars or enough money to buy transportation tickets before transporting them back home via train or boat over open water onto Canadian soil where they were given permission by Canada's Prime Minister Sir John Aird (later Admiral Sir John Fisher) not to be interned like other European war refugees such as Belgian nationals living under French occupation.) On September 3rd American troops liberated Dunkirk following days of heavy fighting between Allied forces and German forces led by General Erich Ludendorff who surrendered unconditionally on September 5th after several months of resistance including suicide bombings against military installations inside France caused by members of his own unit known as "The Kaiser's Own".
