Dunkirk is a small town in the Hudson Valley of New York State, United States. The town was founded in 1881 by millers and farmers who left to flee the American Civil War. Dunkirk's population peaked at 10,000 in 1932, but has decreased since then. The town's most famous landmark is the Dunkirk Memorial Museum which tells the story of Dunkirk and its residents during World War II. The museum also contains artifacts from both World Wars I and II as well as other local history. Dunkirk also has a coffee shop called The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf that began serving coffee in 1984. In 2013, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Dunkirk is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Dunkirk is located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario and is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Dunkirk was Nicholas Hennepin in 1794. He named his new community after Godefroy de Bouillon, Count of Burgundy who had died that year on crusade. The name Bouillon referred to a small village near Dunkirk which Hennepin thought might provide some protection from French attack during the American Revolutionary War. In 1801, Colonel George Washington sent General John Sullivan with 2,500 men to take possession of the place and named it for General James Wolfe who had been killed at Saratoga two years earlier. In 1806 Alexander Macleod built a mill on the south side of Lockport Creek which became one of the most important economic engines in Erie County during the early 19th century due to its production of flour, meal and saw blades. In 1821-24 Christopher Tompkins ran an advertising agency here which helped promote Buffalo as a destination for tourists and commerce began to grow between Buffalo and Niagara Falls area under auspices of this agency - opening up new areas for growth such as Cattaraugus Mountains National Park east of Dunkirk and much farther north along the Canadian border at Northumberland County's Cobourg River valley where mills were also established by Scottish immigrants working in partnership with Americans before World War I; these developments led to increased calls for military assistance against hostile Indian nations (the War Hawk raids) as well as feverish speculation about potential profits generated from supplying war materials abroad rather than just manufacturing domestic goods back home; this made Dunkirk one of America's leading commercial center throughout much of antebellum period especially given its strategic location nestled among lakes Erie & Ontario providing easy transportation links across western New York State while also accommodating increasing numbers both German-American settlers drawn by opportunity (due largely to cheap land prices) while still maintaining close cultural ties with Germany/Austria despite efforts by local authorities over several decades beginning around 1840s increasingly seeking closer ties with Great Britain notwithstanding periodic political unrestrained by those fibers). A post office called "Dunkirk" was established at present day Dunkirk Village in 1865, but remained open only until 1898 when it was moved to Whitehall Township because Whitehall had more residents than either Dunkirk or nearby Easton. A bridge spanning Lockport Creek over it renamed "Christopher Tompkins Bridge" after him in 1903-04 after he donated land for its construction; today's intersectionRoute 902 leads east out from town onto US 6 where it becomes exit 164B off Interstate 80 toward Auburn Junction then proceeds northeast towards Hamburgdamen Airport before turning southeast again becoming Route 902 once again! From 1899 until 1941 parts or all of DunnKirkhaver Borough within current Unicoi Township were included within present day Orleans County although census records show no inhabitants living there excepting soldiers stationed there during World War II! After being excised from Orleans County altogether following countywide consolidation following statehood in 1907 many residents relocated within Unicoi Township including some now residing inside newly formed Orleans–Unicoi Township! Although unincorporated properties located within present day Unicoi Township were annexed into Orleans County via re incorporation effective July 1st 1959 all other lands except those aforementionedwithin presentday Unicoi Township are considered part and parcelofpresent day Orleans County despite having no physical boundaries!) . Today's village started developing primarily due to growing trade interests centering around chemical plants operated by DuPont predecessor Pioneer Chemical Company here since 1905 when company bought lot next door used originally for grazing animals then later developed into largest chemical plant west Of Hudson Bay operated jointly ever by U S Government & private industry until closed 2006 followed by shutdowns Of other major U S chemical plantssince!!). Manufacturing activities have continued through various partnerships including purchasing assets adjoiningDuPont Plant site & moving operations hitherward prior TO closure2006 however shutdowns did not eliminated entire industrial base associated WITH that particular facility)... At the time of its evacuation in 1942, Dunkirk was one of only a few towns on the island that remained unoccupied by Japanese forces during World War II. The town's history dates back to 1795 when it was part of Westchester County. In 1814, it became part of New York State and was renamed Dunkirk after the British naval squadron which surrendered at Gibraltar in 1814. The town had a population of about 100 people in 1824 and declined rapidly until it rose to over 200 people by 1860 due to immigration from England. In 1915, as World War I unfolded, Dunkirk became an important strategic port for Allied forces as it served as a staging ground for shipping along the English Channel. With its strong commercial harbor presence and access to supplies and fuel brought in by sea, Dunkirk also emerged as an important center for munitions production throughout the war. The town experienced significant growth following World War II as thousands of Americans left their homes to fight in Japan's war effort. In 1947, Dunkirk merged with neighboring communities Seaford and Northold to form what is now known as East Hampton Village. Despite its strategic importance during wartime, little has been done to preserve Dunkirk's history since its evacuation days more than 50 years ago. currently there are no plans or funds underway to restore or commemorate this pivotal period in local history; however preservation work could improve if funds were available
