The Coast Guard has been providing service to the people of East Rockaway for over 100 years. The first Coast Guard Station in East Rockaway was established in 1876, and the present-day Coast Guard Station was built in 1939. Throughout its history, the Coast Guard has played an important role in safeguarding our community and its residents. In 1941, the Coast Guard inaugurated its own helicopter squadron. This squadron has since become one of the most successful on Long Island. In 1992, the Coast Guard took possession of a brand new ship, the HMCS Montreal. This vessel is used mainly for Search and Rescue operations as well as ceremonial events such as Fleet Week. The gift of this ship is significant because it shows how much the Coast Guard cares about our community and its residents. Throughout its history, the Coast Guard has also donated many items and equipment to local businesses and organizations. These donations have helped make East Rockaway a more safe place for both individuals and organizations alike. For example, in 2009, the Coast Guardsmen donated two helicopters to Our Lady’s School District #2! This donation will help improve safety within our community by providing emergency medical coverage during severe weather events. Additionally, in 2013, we gave away a diesel boat to local non-profit organization Teach For America! This boat will be run primarily Used for training purposes with children from low-income families who may not have access to other forms of transportation due to budget constraints or lack of resources.

East Rockaway is a borough in the New York City borough of Queens. The population was 39,711 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by Brooklyn to the south, Queens to the west and north, and Staten Island to the east. The name "East Rockaway" was given to it by Dutch colonists who named it after their home town of East Java in Indonesia. The first European settlers arrived in 1624 and began farming land on what is now East Rockaway Avenue. In 1764, George Washington leased 1,000 acres (400 hectares) from Nicholas de Montresor for £10 per year with an option for renewal. By 1800, more than 300 families had moved into East Rockaway from all over New York State and Canada. In 1881, following annexation of Queens by New York City, East Rockaway became part of Queens Borough; however, its residents continued to call themselves "east rockaways." At that time there were only two schools in the borough: one public and one private. In 1932–1933 a new school was built on Richmond Hill Boulevard which served both public and private students; this building still stands today as part of nearby Fresh Meadows Elementary School #2A). On July 20th 1898 an act regulating transportation within Boroughs within New York City was passed by the New York State Senate under Governor Grover Cleveland; this law called for exclusive use of horses for local purposes only except between Brooklyn Heights Cemetery & Jamaica Bay & between Gowanus Canal & Fort Edward Park on Long Island throughout those areas where horse cars could be used but not in any other area within Borough boundaries without special permission from either Mayor or Board of Aldermanic Commissioners (later renamed Council). This law also provided for open yards along each side of streets near homes so that people could walk their dogs etc., until cars got around these limits [today's bike lanes]. With opening up of highways during Prohibition many businesses closed down due lack of customers or money to keep them running; such as barbershops being shuttered & bakeries going outof business (& latterly becoming pet cafes). Today there are several small businesses located near bike lanes that serve coffee/pastries/snacks etc.; such as Thirsty Dog Bakery (below), Joe's Pizza-Bakery (above left), Gourmet Baking Company (& below right), Bakelite Bistro (& below center) - all located just off busy bike lanes like 8th Ave @ 45th St./7th Ave @ 47th St./8th Ave @ 50Th St./9th Ave at 59Th St.; all having bicycle parking available inside plus racks for larger bikes outside! You will find several businesses open late night/early morning including Bakelite Bistro mentioned earlier - open until 2am every day except Wednesdays! Today most people commuting into NYC rely on bus or train stations rather than biking because buses get very crowded during peak hours while trains are much more reliable but less convenient at other times

East Rockaway is a neighborhood in the Borough of Queens in New York City. The area was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland until 1624, when it became part of English Long Island. It was named for East River, which forms its border with Queens. The first Europeans to visit East Rockaway were French traders and missionaries in 1624-25. They called the area "Nieuw Amsterdam". The first permanent resident was John Doane, who arrived in 1627 as one of the investors in what would become Kingston. Doane's descendants are still living there today. In 1764, British General George Washington led an army through Jamaica into Queens on his way to attack Quebec City. In response, King George III ordered Colonel Nicholas Hervey to build a road from Kingston to Flushing so that troops could be transported quickly and easily back and forth between Staten Island andQueens County. The road was also used by farmers and locals for transportation both north and south of New Yorke
The first European settler in what is now East Rockaway was Nicholas-Jacques Conte, who arrived in 1624. The area was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland and was known as the "Gravenhage" (meaning hill of bones) because so many bodies were found there during the early years of English settlement. In 1764, a group led by Israel Putnam purchased 1,200 acres of land on Long Island Sound from the Dutch. They called their new tract "East Rockaway." The Putnams began to build a house on their land and soon started to sell homes off to other settlers. In 1771, they sold their land again, this time to John Jacob Astor. By 1800, East Rockaway had become one of the most important sections of Long Island. It consisted mainly of farms and villages with some small businesses and houses. There were also a few mills and churches here. During the Revolution, East Rockaway played an important role in helping support the British cause. Many patriots lived here during the war including General George Washington and his army headquarters at Valley Forge Lodge at 785 Main Street. After the Revolution, many people moved away from East Rockaway due to fear of yellow fever epidemics which hit New York City hard during that period. However, some people did maintain contact with friends and family here until after World War II when it became increasingly difficult for residents to keep up with changing social mores across America.
