The history of coffee in East Rockaway, New York goes back to the beginning of the 20th century. Coffee began to be grown in this area for purposes other than tea, such as fuel for cars and locomotives. Early coffee beans were bought and roasted by local farmers. The first coffee shops appeared in the early 1900s, and many people from around the region enjoyed their cup of Joe. In 1967, two Dutchmen named Cornelis van der Kolk and Jan van der Linden founded a small business called van der Kolk's Coffee Shop on Hempstead Avenue in East Rockaway. The shop was the first gourmet coffee house in North America. It became one of the most popular tourist destinations in town, hosts dozens of events each year, and remains an important part of East Rockaway's cultural heritage today. Today, there are over 20 gourmet coffee shops across North America that offer unique programming and experiences tailored specifically to espresso lovers around the world. Coffee beans were roasted on small fires called kerosene lights. After being ground, the beans were placed in water and heated until they melted and gave off a thick liquid. This liquid was then poured into drinking cups and served to people.
The first gourmet coffee shop in East Rockaway was founded in 1975 by the late Harry Pratt. The shop served unique and artisanal coffee beans from around the world. Today, Harry's Coffee is still a popular stop for customers in East Rockaway.
East Rockaway is a small town located in the Borough of Queens, New York City. It is bordered by Elmhurst to the north, Jamaica Bay to the east, and Coney Island to the south. The population was 11,045 at the 2010 census. The first settlement in East Rockaway was made in 1814 when Nicholas de Lesseps and his family moved from Suffolk County, England. They set up a cabin on a marshy lot near present-day Roosevelt Avenue and Old Highway 1. The first school in East Rockaway was founded in 1827 by John Hylan and his wife Annabelle Hylan. In 1828, East Rockaway became part of Queens County. In 1904, Charles Eames designed and built the first house in East Rockaway. He used logs that had been cut down on Long Island's eastern coast for his design. The house still stands today at 718 Elmhurst Road outside of town limits. The village of East Rockaway formed on April 15, 1916 when residents of several hamlets within Queens voted to join together as one municipality under the leadership of Mayor Abram Hewitt. At its peak there were over 100 businesses with an estimated population size of 2,500 people within its boundaries which included all but one block of Roosevelt Ave., betweenold routes 1A & 1B (present day Roosevelt Ave./Old Highway 27), most of Back Bay Drive (now Borough Rd.), Cranberry Way between Fordham University Boulevard & Hempstead Pkwy., White Plains Road between Emerson Blvd./Hempstead Pkwy./New Israel Blvd., Demarest Place/Cranberry Way Northwest corner along Beach Dr./Demarest Rd., North Shore Line drive from Beach Dr./Demarest Rd.–northwest corner along Fishkill Ave/Beach Dr.–southwest corner along Ithaca Plank

The first espresso machines were created in the early 1800s by Giovanni Battista Bormino and Carlo Alberto Casagrande. These machines used a cone-shaped metal pot with a hole in the center that was filled with hot water and then dropped into a small coffee cup. The user would wait for the coffee to cool before using it.
East Rockaway is located on the eastern border of Queens County, New York. The name comes from a large rock outcropping in the area that is called "Rockaway." The community was first settled by Dutch and German immigrants in the mid-19th century. In 1892, East Rockaway was incorporated as a borough. It annexed neighboring communities of Maspeth and Jamaica in 1927. The borough's economy has been based largely on agriculture, manufacturing, and trade since its incorporation. East Rockaway has two schools: one public school and one private school. There are also several businesses in the borough, including a grocery store and a convenience store. In recent years, East Rockaway has become known for its nightlife scene. There are numerous bars and clubs located in the borough, including Area X Clubhouse which overlooks an extensive quarry basin used for cooling water for sports stadiums across Queens County. The area now known as East Rockaway was first settled by the Dutch in 1624. The English took over the land in 1664, and renamed it after their previous captain, Sir Edward Easton. The town of East Rockaway was created from part of Southampton Township in 1798. The town's first school was built in 1807. In 1898, a bridge was completed across the Long Island Sound linking the towns of Hempstead andEast Hampton and providing a bypass for New York City's traffic. In 1916, the General Electric plant was built on what is now Governors Island and made east of Main Street part of its territory. In 1962, construction began on an expressway connecting New York City with Interstate 95. This road became known as I-95 East; it runs through the heart of East Rockaway and is one of the most traveled highways in New York state. On July 14, 1990, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck offshore Long Island inflicting serious damage including loss of power to many areas within eastern Queens County along with serious injuries to people near shorelines
