Elmira, New York is a small town in upstate New York. It is located on the banks of the Hudson River and is known for its history and architecture. Elmira (population: 14,029) is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 12,451 at the 2010 census. Elmira is known for its Elmira Grocery store and for the Elmira Mining Company kiln which makes many of the products used in industry such as coal and iron. The town was founded on November 8, 1837 by John Ransom and others as a small hamlet called "Newburgh." It became a village on May 1, 1855. On January 1, 1888 it became a city under the name of Elmira. The first settler in what is now Elmira was Nicholas Biddle who arrived in 1792 from Connecticut. He established himself as a trader along the Mohawk River and soon began to mine lead and silver ore near where he lived at what is now High Bridge Road and State Route 9A today. In 1824 Biddle sold his land to Ebenezer Howland who built the first gristmill in what would become Elmira. The mill produced flour until 1870 when it closed due to competition from larger mills located further away or inside of cities such as Buffalo or Rochester. However, there are several references dating back to 1800 that show how much cornmeal was being exported from this area for cooking purposes even before large mills were established in this part of New York state In 1827 Andrew Mellon donated $10,000 towards building a schoolhouse in what would become Elmira; however only one classroom could be built before funds ran out again two years later so another donation was made which allowed construction of an additional classroom plus an office building with space for 23 students In 1830-31 architect David Crouse designed three brick buildings that served as both public schools (later renamed “Mellon School”) – one on Main Street between Fourth Avenue North and Fifth Avenue North; another on State Route 5 south of Centre Street; and finally yet another school/office complex on Third Street east of Centre Street which functioned also as barracks during times when local militias were needed . These three buildings remain significant icons within downtown Elmira to this day The first post office opened in 1861 (named “Old Post Office”), located at present day First Avenue West between Center Street South and Second Avenue West . In 1865-66 architect George Mifflin designed four more brick buildings – all now privately owned – including two churches (the Methodist Episcopal Church–First Presbyterian Church & First Baptist Church) located just east of First Avenue West between Center Street South and Second Avenue West . From 1872-74 architects Nathan Hale & Alfred Gantt designed five more brick buildings totaling 24 feet wide x 28 feet long with six stories – including four stores (Fenway Store #1 on Seventh Ave., Fenway Store #2 opposite Park Row House #3 off Arlington Place East ), two hotels (The Albany Hotel on Broadway north side next to Capitol Hill Cemetery), two apartment houses (one newly constructed -now called Scotia Heights Apartments – erected immediately after World War Ini gridlock caused deterioration thereof), an insurance company building(Carnegie Insurance Building), plus various other commercial activities associated with early 20th century industrial growth such as breweries, tanneries & chemical works etc .) There are several differing accounts but one story goes that some builders said they hadFaatzie Iron Works voided their permits because they did not have enough bricks! This suggests that although not all developers received permits specifically related to bricks alone there may have been some specific limitations placed upon any given project due to lack availability or special requirements
