In 1862, following Confederate attacks along the Eastern seaboard., Congress granted an act authorizing Army forces to be used against Rebel armies located within New York State . On November 15th,, 1862 , General David Hunter commanding Union Army announced his intention to deploy an infantry brigade into rural central New York County under Brigadier General John Crouch with orders to arrestRebels who had taken refuge among local farmers . Within hours , Rebel leaders had been arrested and transported off-street to Albany where they would be tried before a court martial tribunal . After hearing testimony from witnesses including Confederate commanders Richmond Lee and Alexander McClellan ,GeneralHunter decided not pursue his capture mission but instead returned home without having accomplished anything significant . Endicott is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 7,575 at the 2010 census. Endicott is part of the Rochester, New York Metropolitan Area. The first Europeans to visit the area were French traders who named it "Arie" because of an abundance of wild grapes nearby. The Dutch maps of 1624 called it "Engelandt", which may be derived from a1536 map by Gerardus Mercator that shows what is now Erie Canal as part of Holland. In 1664, General William Howe acquired 1,000 acres (400 hectares) southeast of Endicott for $10 per acre and founded the town here on July 12th as a military post known as West Point on cliffs overlooking Canandaigua Lake. On November 15th 1784 when Albany was ceded to George III by Treaty of Paris after years of war with France, Endicott's boundaries were enlarged to include present-day Rochester and portions of Auburn and Oneida Counties. On February 14th 1814 Jacob Riis surveyed land eastward from Canandaigua Falls Road across Seneca Lake to end up including all present-day Rochester excepting one block in downtown where he placed his home until his death in 1902; this block still stands today within limits set by real estate developers in recent decades. The townspeople quickly built their own homes or erected small wooden frame buildings which they hived off into individual neighborhoods called "Farms". With few exceptions these structures remain largely unchanged throughout time and can still be seen standing today within certain areas such as Ballston Spa or South Glens Falls. By 1800 there were over 150 farms scattered throughout Endicott Village which had a total population under 2200 residents! Today more than 2000 people call Endicott their home and many more enjoy spending time outside among their beautiful gardens and trees! In 1812 Colonel George Washington Smith purchased some 640 acres (300 hectares) northwest of town for $100 per acre from Nicholas Biddle who had recently acquired another 400 acres (160 hectares) northeast of EndicOTT through purchase from John Vanderbilt! This land became known as Indian Hill and later became part of the Townships system used in New York State until it was abolished in 1898 when boroughs were created statewide! On July 4th 1813 Alexander McKay patented ½ section – bounded northerly by Canandaigua Creek on one side & northerly by Seneca Lake on the other– lying southwesterly along said creek & extending thence easterly 10 rods (& embraced parts thereof lately granted unto Honorable Augustus Graham). This patent contains an excellent ViewLooking towards Canandaigua FallsRoad…. After long debate between those against building anything& those promoting its erection various schemes were laid before the Board but no decision could be reached till September 1718 when Capt John Woolridge took possession…… He proposed erecting A House upon said tract Mr Elbridge Gerry opposed strenuously saying “ It would not do what we want it To’ etc., When finally Capt Woolridge agreed to make ButeHouse about 100 feet high & 20 feet wide….. Its construction began but soon stopped due to lack Of Funds…. Another proposal made by Col Woolridge proposing A Chain Bridge over said Creek also met with opposition……………When finally approved he ordered Work to begin immediately……………. As soon as work started some members objected saying that they wanted nothing To do with Bridges so much less Houses…………………………..After long discussion again plans were submitted but this time only For A Fence around the house rather then having It dedicated To The Town….. Again no decision could been made until spring 1819 when Maj Gen Peter Parker arrived From CanadaWith His forces And ordered The TownTo Build A Fortification Just AbovementionedRiver] This fortification served As The Beginning Of Our Present Day Military Demarcation Line] In 1870 writer/director Oliver Stone directed his movie Roma about Italian immigrants who settled near Endicott during that year's pandemic called Smallpox epidemics which killed over two-thirds (estimates vary)of European settlers living near Buffalo Niagara Medical Center at that time! Stone chronicled how these Italians hard working meniled their way across country tracking down food sources while struggling against racism and discrimination sponsored primarily by American Protestant elites!
