Endicott is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 11,521 at the 2000 census. Endicott is located on the southern border of New York City. It is part of the Financial District of Manhattan. The first settlements in what became Endicott were made near where there are now Park Avenue and Third Street in 1785 by Revolutionary War veterans Colonel George Washington and Major General John Sullivan. At that time, much of what is now Endicott was swampy land which would not support human life so many years later it was drained and developed into a small town with a few scattered homes until 1825 when government efforts to increase agricultural production created demand for more housing and businesses in the area around Tenth Avenue and Broadway. In 1827, the village of East Meadow was formed from parts of Endicott along with nearby White Plains as one result of an effort by then-Governor Andrew Johnson to encourage settlement along both sides of Long Island Sound by offering tax breaks and other incentives to those who moved there. In 1835, following purchase by Benjamin Franklin Dyson (the founder of Tyndall Rubber Company), most areas surrounding present-day Endicott were annexed to his new village as well; these included all but eastern portions of today's Town Square east of Tenth Avenue between Park Row and Third Street). A year later, following surveys prepared by surveyors hired by Congregationalist minister Elijah Parish Jr., decision was made to name the new Village after Samuel Morse – one half owner (with his brother Edward)of America’s first successful Morse Telegraph cable line between Boston and Philadelphia – providing further evidence that early settlers intended this location for residential purposes only. In 1851, following passage through Congress recognizing New York State as a “free state” within the Union, Mendon Township adjacent to modern day Middleburgh incorporated as endowing township upon request from some citizens who had petitioned for it during its existence as part of Clinton Township including prosperous farmer Augustus Kelley who donated land comprising present day North Main Street between Eighth Avenue westward from Ninth Street (now Fourth Avenue) and Fifth Street eastward from Tenth Avenue). On November 5th 1860 voters approved incorporation under this name with Isaac Winchester serving as Mayor at that time; designation change followed on December 1st 1865 when Winchester sold his interest in the township back to residents subject thereto after achieving successionship over two years while living at Peekskill Junction on Oneida Lake due south thereof). Upon Winchester's death on January 7th 1870 he bequeathed all remaining property hereinuch together with equipment used thereinfor surveying purposes thenceforth being known colloquially as "Winchester Estate."
