Floral Park is a small town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 7,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rockville Centre– Westchester metropolitan area. The village of Floral Park was created from parts of two other villages on Long Island: Bethpage and Southampton. The first settler in Floral Park was John Suter who arrived in 1792. He named his estate "Floral Park." A schoolhouse and a few homes were built in 1812 by Dr. Moses Woodbury and Dr. Samuel Cooper, both residents of Bethpage Village across the bay from Floral Park on Long Island Sound. Drs. Woodbury and Cooper also donated land for a park which would later be called Floral Park Village; it included their house as well as about . In 1824, Colonel Nicholas Henshaw purchased some land east of Main Street to make up for not donating any land to the village – he had earlier agreed to do so when he helped to create Nassau County! In 1827, Captain Lewis Fenton bought some more land east of Main Street from Colonel Nicholas Henshaw; this became known as Fenton's Farm because it served as an experimental ground for grew crops (Fenton had been granted a patent for this process by Nicholas Henshaw). As time passed, additional property was acquired including several buildings on what is now Elmhurst Avenue between Church Road and Indian Hill Road (this area now includes part of Roslyn). In 1830, Isaac Parsons married Anna Mottamuthi-Smith at Stonington Church; they moved into one of the new houses on Elmhurst Avenue (now Roslyn avenues). This house still stands today with its original portico and clapboard siding - it is one of only a few surviving examples dating back to that period in FloralParkVillage history! In 1835-36, Augustus Wexler erected one of the earliest frame buildings in FloralParkVillage – which still stands today – known as No. 4 Congress Hall/Wexler House (later renamed No 5 Congress Hall), located at 300 Main Street between Northumberland Boulevard and Indian Hill Road (the building now serves as headquarters for Nassau County government). Wexler was born in Germany but immigrated to America around 1800 where he worked his way up through society until becoming owner/manager/founderof several businesses such as shipbuilding company Nautical Institute & Dry Dock Company near Great Lakes dockyards during the late 19th century before moving his business operations ashore permanently at 701 Waterfront Place c1901 while living aboard SS America which sailed out daily from Pier One next door.) An important event that took place within these years occurred on October 20th 1889 when Mrs Jane Addams gave birth to her son Robert Frost Jr., then aged just 11 months old at her home on East 117th Street between Third Avenue South and Second Avenue South -DRY DOCKSIDE!!! This event has been often cited by locals as being 'the beginning' or 'the turning point' regarding how people perceivedFloralParkVillage overall... Floral Park was an agricultural settlement in the Town of Hempstead, now part of New York City, in 1824. The name is derived from a local legend that a woman named Flora found wildflowers on her property and gave the settlement its name. A post office was established at Floral Park in 1825, and remained in operation until 1951. The first settler to live in Floral Park was Andrew Lewis. In 1847, the town of Hempstead annexed Floral Park as part of its territory; however, residents continued to use their own names for their settlements. In 1850, when the town became a city, Floral Park became known as "the Garden District". The earliest residences were built near what is now Central Avenue and Watkins Road. In 1861, two years after the city's incorporation, General Electric began constructing an electric plant at Jamaica Bay; this relocated many of the nearby businesses to new sites within Floral Park proper. During World War II, Floral Park served as one of several wartime training camps for New York City's bomb squadrons. The Floral Park area was first settled in the early 17th century by Dutch colonists. The area was acquired by the British in 1664 and became part of New York City. In 1815, Floral Park was renamed Prospect Heights after the then-prominent real estate firm of Prospect House. The area continued to be called Prospect Heights until it reverted back to its original name in 1844 following a fire that destroyed much of thethen-residential district. The current name, Floral Park, is first mentioned in a deed dated November 3, 1785, which described land along First Avenue as "A tract of ground lying east from Third Street."
