Mansfield founded the Marine Store in downtown Fredonia and began selling items related to sailing including anchors, moorings, lifejackets, and more. They also started selling consumer goods such as clothing and toys for children at their store until it closed in the late 1920s.
Fredonia, New York is a small village in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. Fredonia is located on the Great Lakes shoreline and is east of the town of Holland. It is part of the Rochester-Middlesex Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Fredonia was John Morse in 1792. He built a log cabin on land that he bought from the local Indians. In 1807, George Stephenson founded a sawmill here and drove a wagon road through the area to bring logs to his foundry in Schenectady. By 1835, there were six stores and two plank mills in Fredonia with an output of $2 million per year. The Panic of 1893 destroyed much of this economic activity but by 1902 there were 12 stores and three mills with an output of $10 million per year. In 1903, Fredonia had its own schoolhouse which remains today as one of only two public schools operating in Rochester-Middlesex School District No 7 (the other being Elmira). In 1907, Fredonia became home to America's first amusement park called "The Forest" which featured rides like a log flume and a water slide; it closed down after one season due to financial difficulties. Thereafter many small businesses sprang up throughout downtown serving customers at various points around the clock until 1955 when Interstate 95 interrupted traffic flow making downtown business unprofitable so most businesses relocated away from downtown or shuttered their doors altogether during that time period also known as Downtown Decline era for Fredonia Village despite having been listed on US Community Development Financial Institutions program approved list since 1978 as economically viable community with growth potential according to pre-approved plans submitted by developers/owners). This history has led some people to call Downtown Fredonia Village ghost town although no such thing exists within city limits or even within rural boundaries any more because all these businesses have either moved out or are defunct nowdays because I-95 & major highways have taken over most forms hereabouts making it difficult for firms & restaurants to survive (& this despite having been approved by HUD’s CDFI program back in 1978). Today Downtown includes several blocks north of Main Street including Oneonta Avenue formerly known as Depot Square before Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute opened there in 1865 followed by Elmira Polytechnic Institute then Buffalo State University before closing down operationally circa 2002 creating still another vacancy/void left behind (& few if any residents remaining). This also means that nearly all active storefronts situated between First Street south 2nd Avenue west along Main Street towards Depot Square (formerly called Depot Square) & Oneonta Ave are currently vacant now days meaning little or no business activity takes place within block boundaries anymore especially during daytime hours providing yet another symptom/markerof Downtown Decline Era forFredonia Village despite being included on preapproved development plans submitted back in 1978)
