Freeport is a town in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 9,562 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Chemung County. The first settlement in the area now known as Freeport was on Staten Island by Dutch colonists in 1624. The area was part of Albany County until 1784 when it became Chemung County. In 1854 Freeport became a city and was incorporated as such on February 15, 1855. On July 1, 1920, Freeport merged with the nearby towns of Northport and Porterville to form one large municipality with a total population of 23,438. On January 1, 1931 it again annexed Porterville and its population increased to 26,000 people making it the third largest city in the new municipality. On October 24th 1954 Freeport merged with Buffalo to form what is now called "Buffalo-Freeport". In 1969-1970 freeport annexeed Yatesville for an unknown reason but this annexation has never been confirmed or denied by either party involved
