Freeport is a small town in the Catskill Mountains of New York. It is located about 25 miles (40 km) north of Ithaca, on the border of Chenango County and Albany County. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. The community first developed as a trading post on the now abandoned Mohawk River by fur traders in the early 1800s. The name Freeport comes from French for "free port." In 1824, Commodore John Stevens and his fleet anchored at Freeport to purchase goods from Native Americans who had been kidnapped by white traders. Some years later, Commodore Stevens' successor Rear Admiral James K. Polk visited Freeport and recommended that the U.S., under his leadership, open up trade with India so that American merchants could benefit from their products there instead of being shut out by British ships operating out of Quebec City. In 1843, John Palfrey became president of Syracuse University and decided to move its main campus eastward into what is now Hempstead Township in order to make room for new students on Alexander Hamilton Park (later renamed Palfrey Field). He also founded Palfrey Dairy which today still operates out of Freeport as a family-owned dairy farm with over 100 cows. On October 16, 1896, Verne Agerstrom donated land adjacent to Palfrey Dairy to create an airport named after him which served as the first commercial airport in New York State; it was destroyed during World War II but has been rebuilt several times since then including most recently in 2009 after undergoing $180 million renovation project It wasn't until 1984 when entrepreneur Donald Trump's development company purchased part of Verne Agerstrom's property which included all or parts of both airports - now known as Trump International Airport - that Freeport began seeing some real growth spurt due largely to tourism opportunities surrounding this iconic site . Freeport is a small town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern tip of Long Island and is adjacent to the hamlet of Freeport Harbor. The town was founded by settlers from Rhode Island in 1817. The first stores in Freeport were established by Nicholas "Nico" Kapp and John Treadwell in 1819. NICO & JT's store was destroyed by a fire in 1825, but KAPP & CO opened their store two years later. In 1830 Freeport became part of the newly formed Kingsbury district and had its own post office from that year until 1861 when it became part of the larger Hudson Valley district under then-Governor Richard Stockton. In 1856 William Cramer purchased land east of Freeport and founded what would become known as Cramer's Landing on Long Island Sound which served as the town's primary port for shipping goods and passengers between New York City and points west until 1970 when containerized traffic began making up most of the town's business activity. Freeport experienced significant growth after World War II with waves of immigrants coming to work on farms or start businesses in what would become one of America's largest industrial regions; however, since 2000s there has been a decline in manufacturing jobs due to automation/the rise of online sales opportunities.
