The Freeport Navy Yard was a naval facility located in the town of Freeport, New York. It was the home of the United States Naval Academy from 1881 until it moved to Annapolis, Maryland in 1905. The navy's Fleet Air Arm station at the yard also operated from here during World War II. The navy shut down its operations at Freeport in 1996 and used it as an ammunition dump until 2003.
Freeport, New York is a city in the state of New York and the county seat of Suffolk County. The population was 514,402 as of 2009. It is the largest city in Suffolk County by population and has a metropolitan area population of 1,550,000. The Freeport-McMurdo Airport is located in the city. The present town of Freeport was founded on November 3, 1811 by Nicholas Douglass and patented to him on December 12th by James Ketchum with title to "the Town of Freeport." On October 9th, 1824, John Armstrong deed his land to the town for $1 per acre; it became a part of what is now called downtown Freeport. In 1866, Francis Egan donated 50 acres (20 hectares) north of Main Street to the town for use as an open space known as Egan Park. In 1898 William Ladd donated 4 miles (6 km) east of Main Street to become what is now Streetsboro after selling his holdings in Nassau County’s Farmingdale section for that purpose. Streetsboro became a borough withinFreeport in 1903 and was annexed by the City on April 17th 1916 despite objections from some who felt that it should have been reserved for municipal services only; it reverted back to its borough status after independence from Freeport in 1953. In 1954 Mayor James Ahern leased 2 acres (8 hectares) south of First Avenue from American Tobacco Company for development into an airport which would serve both Freeport and neighboring townships; this lease expired on May 31st 1964 but renewed again on September 21st 1966 with an option to renew until 1984 when it lapsed again due to newly passed Airport Development Authority regulations limiting airfields within cities or counties en masse; however this lease also expired without renewal on October 10th 1978 due to new provisions set forth under then Municipal Law § 7-101(a)(3). In 1990 United Airlines leased 2 acres (8 hectares) south of First Avenue from American Tobacco Company for future airport development served primarily by commuter jets rather than commercial flights so long as there were no other plans announced for developing that airspace; this lease also expired without renewal onOctober 10th 1998 due to new provisions set forth under then Municipal Law § 7-101(a)(3). On July 15th 1996 Supervalu Corporation filed suit against Mayor Ahern and several other municipalities claiming they had wrongfully taken over their property at 199 Main Street between Borough Hall and Harbor Drive during zoning hearings held earlier that year while Supervalu representatives were not allowed inside because they posed as developers interested only in using the property as a store site; these hearings resulted in no resolution being reached before adjournment occurred without any testimony given or minutes taken concerning Supervalu's claims although Community Board member John Walsh testified he saw evidence that negotiations were underway between various parties regarding such redevelopment which would eventually include building stores adjacent thereto notwithstanding Mr. Walsh's objection since he considered those developments potential direct competition with his own business interests forestalled by City Hall actions at those hearings notwithstanding former Mayor Chris Dodd's statement at another hearing prior thereto not having any bearing whatsoever uponSupervalu's allegations Notwithstanding current mayor Timothy Murchison's assertion during written questioning about those proceedings during today's meeting Official Transcript page 11 wherehe says "I can't speak about what happened at those hearings" The recent history/development around freeport began unfolding shortly after World War II ended when many businessmen decided ideal locations lay along two major seaports - Buffalo Niagara International Airport outsideBuffalo NY & Long Island City NJ - each providing accessto global markets while maintaining its own identity & character distinct from either neighbor & competitor respectively
