Fulton, New York is a small town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 1,927 at the 2010 census. The town is named for Samuel Fulton, who settled there in 1784. It became an incorporated village in 1872 and a town in 1881. The first post office was established in 1829. The settlement of Fulton initially consisted of only a few homes and families traveled to the larger towns for work or education. In 1862, the area became part of the new Town of Buffalo after it was taken from Niagara Falls by the United States Congress as part of Act 7line during the American Civil War. In 1916, Fulton merged with nearby villages of Canandaigua and Deposit to form what is now known as Canandaigua-Deposit-Fulton Township. In 1928, all three villages formed again as separate towns when their populations exceeded 10% of the total population within each village boundaries (Canandaigua-Deposit-Fulton had a population over 15% but still remained separate). At that time, Canandaigua-Deposit-Fulton had a total population of 19,542 people including 14 municipalities which made up its borders: Allegany Park North (north side), Auburn Hills South (south side), Bayside East (east side), Brighton Beach/South Side (south side), Buffalo Creek North (north side), Delaware Water Gap West/Eastside (west side) - making it one large municipality with 34 wards or districts. On March 24th 1959 Mayor Ralph Jaffe announced plans for fusion between all three towns into one city under his leadership; this would have resulted in an increase to the city's population from 21,000 residents to 75,000 residents over five years and make it one of America's largest cities by 1969 - well before Buffalo ever achieved that status! However on April 25th 1959 voters rejected this merger proposal by a margin of 63%. After various meetings and hearings throughout 1960–1961 no decisions were made about whether or not to continue pursuing this merger until finally on December 3rd 1961 Mayor John Fenton announced that they would go ahead with the merger but that only canadaigonua would be included within City Limits instead of annexing any other municipalities! This decision effectively killed off any hope that Fulton could become America's next big city! After years without much progress another effort was launched in 2007 by then Mayor Timothy Dolan led effort called "New START" which aimed at creating jobs and expanding infrastructure despite some setbacks such as lower than expected real estate prices due to competition from Buffalo . Despite these efforts though Fulton has seen some growth especially since 2013 when they hosted President Barack Obama during his visit . Currently local businesses are using their tax dollars to help improve roads and sidewalks while also hiring new employees
