Carver donated this land to build what would become known as Carver University; today'sCarver Campus comprises over 100 buildings on about 20 acres (8 km2). After years of planning and construction, located just south of downtown nearpresent-day Midtown Manhattan, Carver's campus opened in 1911. The university has since expanded several times with new buildings and enrollments reaching over 7,000 students each semester. Fulton was founded in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Fulton, a French immigrant who had been born in the Netherlands. He arrived in New York City on December 12, 1795, and set about building a ferry service between Brooklyn and Manhattan. The first ferry reached Manhattan on April 14, 1814. Fulton's ferry company soon became one of the most successful in the city. In 1827, he built the first steamboat to navigate the then uncharted East River. Fulton also developed what is now known as New York City's subway system; his boats were used to transport passengers and goods across the river. In 1845, Fulton erected what is now known as Liberty Bridge over the East River; this bridge served as a major artery for traffic and commerce in New York City until FDR's electrification of the river created new challenges for transportation. Today, only a few fragments of Fulton's original Ferry Building remain visible within Lower Manhattan; however, its legacy remains etched into our city's history.

Fulton was the first city in New York State to be founded. It was named for Sir George Fulton, an Englishman who had been granted a patent for the construction of canals in 1814. The city's founding is also commemorated by the Statue of Liberty, which was placed in Central Park in 1886.
