The Garden City Army Post Office served as the army's primary mail and courier service from 1854 until 1865. The post office was located on Main Street in Garden City, New York, between Elm and Maple Streets. From 1855 to 1861 it was called the "Garden City Arsenal." In 1862, the post office moved to new quarters on Green Street in what is now the heart of downtown Garden City. From 1862 to 1865, the army used the Garden City Arsenal for storage and forprocessing military orders, supplies, and messages. The arsenal also served as a barracks for soldiers stationed in or around Garden City. In 1865, after the end of World War I, the army discontinued its postal services in New York State and transferred all mail operations to Albany, New York. The GardenCity Armory continued to be used as a storage facility until it was purchased by local developers in 1925 and turned into an open-air shopping mall known today as Midtown Plaza.

Rockefeller, and served as a military organization until 1947. Garden City is a city in the Finger Lakes region of the New York State System, located on the Mohawk River. The population was 19,811 at the 2010 census. Garden City is one of two cities in Chenango County and it contains all of the unincorporated areas within its limits. The first people to live in Garden City were German settlers who arrived from Swabia in 1784. They cleared land and built homes near what is now Main Street and Park Avenue. The town's name was changed to Garden City after President James K. Polk ordered that no new towns be named for him between Chenango and Oswego Counties because he felt those counties had been Growth Towns when he was governor of New York). In 1834, Adam Clayton Powell Jr., then a young Congressman from New York's 2nd District, established himself as a leader in the town by running for office as an independent Democrat against incumbent General John Armstrongsleigh. He won handily and became known as "the most popular congressman ever". In 1835, he helped found Albany's first political party - the National Democratic Club - which later became the American Party. As part of America's Great Migration (1915-1965), many eastern European peasants moved westward through America during World War I to find jobs or start their own families; Beginning around 1915 they began calling themselves " Gemanians ". Many people who originated from Germany also moved into southern Ontario during this time period including Friedrich Naumann (1881-1963) who founded Mississauga Township in Toronto with his brother Maximilian naumann (1885-1973). After World War II ended many Germans returned home but others chose not to leave their new countries because of economic opportunities available back home. In 1957, Garden City merged with neighboring village Ogdensburg to form one municipality under Mayor Seymour Siegelman'. In 1978, Gardeningtown annexed adjacent villages Unadilla andUlsterville which gave Garden City a total population of 32 farmers & homeowners! Gardeningtown has always been an agricultural community due to its location on highlands overlooking Mohawk Valley farmland where crops are grown such as corn, beans, peas & wheat; The city has also enjoyed hunting & fishing opportunities due to its close proximity to several lakes Erie & Ontario; currently there are over 50 businesses employing over 140 residents directly or indirectly via their businesses
