The Coast Guard has been in operation in Garden City, New York since 1892. The firstshoreguard detachment was created on December 3, 1892. At that time the Coast Guard had only six boats and a small staff. The first shore guard detachment served for one year and two months. In 1898, the Coast Guard purchased three steamships, the SMS "Empire" (1898), SS "Nassau" (1900) and the SS "Newburgh" (1902). The Coast Guard used these ships to patrol the Hudson River from Albany to Newburgh. In 1902, a new station was built at Garden City on Governors Island. This new station became operational on May 1, 1903. It was known as Station Ketchikan until 1915 when it was renamed as Station Garden City after Governor George Prentice Gardiner of New York State. On November 17, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson dedicated Station Ketchikan at Garden City to commemorate America’s entry into World War I. In 1922, Congress passed an act authorizing the purchase of four more vessels which were delivered between 1923-27: USS Constitution (1923), USS Holland (1925), USS Sims (1926) and USS Crane (1928). The Coast Guard acquired its current fleet of 33 Vessels in 1990 through the Metropolitan Pier Squadron program administered by NYParks maritime resource planning department located at Terminal 5 of John F Kennedy International Airport in Queens Borough Manhattan.. These Vessels constitute a vital part of our coast guard mission that helps protect our citizens and coastal communities from all types of threats including piracy and smuggling; they are also essential for providing law enforcement support during emergencies such as hurricanes or earthquakes

The Garden City, New York Coast Guard Station was founded in 1917 as a result of the merger of two separate organizations: the old Nassau County Sheriff's Department and the new Suffolk County Sheriff's Department. The station was originally located on Governors Island but moved to its present location on Staten Island in 1922. In 1943, the Coast Guard acquired an airfield on Long Island and began using it for training. The airfield was sold to the Air Force in 1945 and became known as Mount Hope Airport. In 1949, the Coast Guard transferred ownership of the airport to the New York State government and it is now part of John F. Kennedy International Airport.
Garden City, New York is a small town located in upstate New York. It is the smallest of the four towns in the city of Albany and has only about 1,000 residents. Garden City was founded in 1887 by farmers who were looking for a place to raise their crops. The town grew rapidly during the early years of World War I, and it became an important military base during the war. In 1915, Garden City became an incorporated village. After World War II, Garden City lost much of its population due to new development in Albany and other nearby towns. Today, Garden City remains a small town with a strong community spirit. The history of Garden City goes back to 1887 when farmers from upstate New York decided to settle in what is now central New York State. They named their new settlement after Mount Eden on Long Island where they had seen tracts of land available for purchase. The original settlers were mostly men; only one woman participated in the founding of Garden City. Many of these early settlers were veterans from the American Civil War who came to find new homes after being discharged from service. In 1915, when GardenCity became an incorporated village, it had just under 2,500 residents total: 1,100 men and 1,100 women. Unlike today's villages which are typically composed almost entirely of individuals over the age of 25 (i.e., Generation X), at that time there wasn't really any type of social or economic structure within Village Hall as most decisions were made through consensus voting among all members present at any given time- something that still happens today! There was also no such thing as email or instant messaging back then so messages would take many weeks to arrive even though everyone was theoretically subscribed! However despite this lack thereof formalities within Village Hall things did not quite work out as planned as soon as hostilities ceased and war dollars began flowing into our coffers once again! Although we experienced some rough times during World War I (the Ammunition Act caused mass production shortages throughout 1916) overall myVillage managed to bounce back very quickly thanks largely to our citizens’ willingness & ability To Vote! And boy did they vote…A LOT!! We cast ballots for Mayor EVERY year from 1915 thru 1920 including 3 straight years runs by Mrs Fenton (she even served two terms!). Nowadays you can see evidence Of This Voting Culture all around Town square – From The Original Ballpark ThatWasstill extant until recently (& still In Use!), To The VERY SIZE & MANY PARKS/RACES THAT HAVE BEEN ADDED TO THE AREA OVER TIME!!! Let’s be honest; If You Haven’t voted In At Least One Of These Last 4 Years YOU Are really Missing Out….. 😉 So If You Wanna Start waving Your FingerAbout How “Voting Is Not Enough” Then I suppose You might As Well Just Stick Up For Us HERE In GARDEN CITY NY…. The Coast Guard has been a part of American society for over 120 years. The Coast Guard was established on May 25, 1915 as the United States Life-Saving Service (LSS). The LSS was created to provide law enforcement and maritime security services throughout the Atlantic, Pacific, and Caribbean seas. On September 12, 1916, the LSS became known as the United States Coast Guard. In 1938, the first coast guard cutter was built and operations began in Hampton Roads. On November 5, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law the National Defense Act which increased funding for the Coast Guard by 50%. The Coast Guard received its present name on December 14th of that year when it was activated into a service with an authorized strength of 650 personnel. Since its inception as a service with an authorized strength of 650 personnel, the Coast Guard has conducted more than 2 million patrols along America’s coastline. In addition to providing law enforcement and maritime security services across America’s coasts; we also support search and rescue efforts during emergencies such as hurricanes or earthquakes; offer educational opportunities to children; conduct military training; provide humanitarian assistance; maintain U.S.-registered vessels in international waters; participate in joint peacekeeping efforts worldwide; protect U.S., foreign nationals traveling abroad through travel alerts/warnings and other surveillance activities; respond to marine accidents including shipwrecks involving endangered sea turtles or migratory shorebirds; provide environmental education at local schools through vessel tours/demonstrations/presentation projects/etc.; operate specialty helicopters during disasters such as wildfires or floods etc.; complete more than 1 million miles of oceanographic surveys per year! And much more! Today's coast guard gift history can be traced back to 1915 when Congress passed an act establishing the United States Life-Saving Service (LSS) which would become known as eventually becoming later renamed simply "the Coast Guard". At that time there were no regulations governing what type of gifts could be given to members of Congress so any kind gift(s) sent were greatly appreciated by many lawmakers who lobbied heavily for passage of this important legislation. Gifts from individuals within society were not common at that time so many items donated today including radios, watches & even clothes got sent out with each shipment destined for agents stationed around our country ready should something happen ashore or while on duty - anything goes back then! As Coastal Command grew larger over time they adopted new flagship ships name changed again 4 times before finally settling on their current modified 47 foot long steel spermaceti fiberglass exploration platform christened USS George Washington" - now one of American's most famous & revered coastal protection assets ever based upon her visit to New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina disaster in 2005! Other notable vessels include: USS Mount Whitney (CG-9), CG-10 Celeste (CG-11), CG-12 Dreamer II (CG-13), CG-14 Nautilus (CG -15), USCGC Polar Star (PCG 71) & PCG 73 Apollo 11 - all currently serving active duty with various assignments all around our great nation providing essential coastal defense capability against both nationally significant events like hurricanes Katrina & Sandy Hook NJ arena fire
