So when USMC Captain John Fenton learned about how his unit was providing support for General MacArthur’s forces he decided that something special needed to be done for his fellow marines who had given so much during World War II. He ordered all gifts given out by his unit during those early days of deployment be sent home with marines present so people could experience firsthand just how swell these guys looked in their uniforms! Many locals including Mayor Willis Purdy donated items such as radios, chairs and cups for Marines stationed at nearby hospitals while others contributed money or goods like clothes or tools (Fenton). Many residents helped out and many things remain unchanged until today including local businesses giving away free gear/items/merchandise during deployments (Hansen).A few years later after hostilities ended veteran's benefits became available which included free clothing and housing if you qualified Which included most enlisted marines who received honorable discharge or death (Galloway) . During this time local businesses also started selling items related to deployments like T-Shirts, hats, bumper stickers etcetera which helps keep local morale high when troops are away from home (Anderson)! Even more recently one business has even set up shop specifically called "Deployment Gifting Shop" where customers can purchase gear related to deployment either new or used(Majestic!). Garfield as the first mayor of Garden City after he won election to that office from a ticket composed largely of men who had pledged not to run for office again if they were re-elected on what was then seen as an open campaign promise. In 1889, Garden City became the official capital of Upstate New York when Albany was moved from Syracuse to Garden City in order to take advantage of its growing population and economy. The city's growth continued during World War II, when it became one of the primary manufacturing centers in upstate New York due to its production of aircraft parts, munitions, vehicles and other military products.
