The Garden City Navy Yard was home to the New York Naval Shipyard from 1892-1936. The yard produced a wide variety of naval vessels, including submarines, battleships, and cruisers. The first submariners were recruited at the naval shipyard in 1898. In 1936, the navy station in Garden City closed and all of its remnants were transferred to Hyde Park, Queens. Today the navy presence remains strong but has been reduced significantly due to budget constraints; only two destroyers remain at the yard while all other warships have been decommissioned or mothballed.
