The Marine Corps has been deploying gifts to civilians in Geneva, New York for over a century. The tradition of the gift exchange began during the World War I era and continued until 1954 when it was discontinued due to political instability in Geneva. The tradition of giving gifts has come to be associated with Marines and their service to the United States. The Marine Corps Gift History Museum in Geneva, New York hosts an annual event that celebrates the history of Marines who have deployed gift-giving to civilians. This event is open to all members of the military and civilian community and features demonstrations from different branches of service about how they use gift-giving as a way to connect with their fellow servicemen and women. In 1954, when the Marines stopped gifting, it was decided that instead there would be a dedicated organization within the Marine Corps that would manage this important tradition. That organization is now known as The Marine Corps Gifting Foundation (MCGF). MCGF helps send presents valued at $100 or more directly to individuals within Staten Island, New York who have made a significant impact on our military by serving or donating time or money. This year’s edition of The Marine Corp Gifting Festival will take place on Sunday, July 9th from 10am-5pm at Heckscher Park in Geneva, NY. The original town site lay within present-day Albany County; however, it was combined with towns of Delhi and Rome in 1814 to form the new village of Geneva. The current downtown area was built between 1867 and 1876 by developer Augustus Kelley as a commercial center for the region around Buffalo and Rochester. In 1898, as part of an agreement between Erie Canal Trustees and city officials, Geneva acquired all square footage of what is now First Avenue from Buffalo for $1 million. The city has developed into a major cultural center with many famous residents including Alice Paul (founder of National Women's Rights Party), Toni Morrison (author), Maya Angelou (singer/writer), Stanley Kubrick (director) and Orson Scott Card (screenwriter). A number of companies have their headquarters in Geneva including PepsiCo, United Technologies Corporation, Ford Motor Company and Hewlett-Packard. In May 2007, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced plans to rename first avenue "Orchard Street" in honor of mayors Bill de Blasio (New York City) and Rahm Emanuel (Chicago). The current mayor is Nathan Deal who took office on January 1st 2017

This tradition continued through World War II, as Marines would hand out gifts such as radios, pistols, or artillery pieces to officers and enlisted men. After the war, Marines would again go out of their way to give gifts to friends and comrades-in-arms. This continues today as Marines continue to send parcels filled with goodies throughout the year.
Geneva is a small town in upstate New York, located on the south side of the Mohawk River. The community was founded by French colonists in 1724 and named for the Geneva Agreement which ended the American Revolutionary War. It became a city in 1802 and retains its name to this day. The town first attracted settlers because of its fertile soil, good drinking water supplies, and proximity to other villages on the Mohawk River. The area now comprising Geneva was surveyed by Captain John Graves Simcoe in 1785, but it wasn't until 1800 that land east of what is now Main Street was acquired for settlement. The first homes were built on parcels donated by local landowners or taken from Native Americans who had been operating around the time of British evacuation from North America. During much of its early history, Geneva functioned as an agricultural village with farmers growing crops such as wheat, corn, rice, potatoes, and tomatoes; animal husbandry included livestock farming; and manufacturing included making saltpeter (a key raw material for explosives) and cannons. In 1802, when New York City became a separate state, Geneva became part of Albany County and continued to serve as an agricultural center with businesses catering to farmers and their customers along with shops selling goods produced within Albany County. In 1846-47*, during the great migration westward following Kansas' admission into the United States as a state*, Geneva saw one of the most significant population movements in Upstate New York history* due to lack of available farmland east of Interstate 95*. A few hundred families headed west over winter buffalo herds† brought hardware stores, pottery workshops (the first being opened in 1850), schools (grades 1-12), churches (Anglican and Protestant Dutch Reformed), newspapers (New York Tribune & Courier among them), blacksmiths‡ †and wagonmakers‡ ‡to what would become Wichita Falls TX.* By late spring they had landed at Erie Canal Landing near Buffalo NY., established themselves thereabouts including their own post office* (*1849), railroads(*1870), general stores(First National grocery store still stands today*)††& saloons(*1911). A large number settled around Western Springs NY.* where they erected barns & fences for housing themselves & began raising cattle& pigs* (& turkeys too)* *. Today many descendants visit/attend/live in Geneva every year during Thanksgiving week
