The army gift history of Glens Falls, New York dates back to 1812 when the United States Army established its first post in the town. It was known as Fort William Henry and was used for garrison duty and training new recruits. In 1824, the fort was renamed Fort Niagara after the Battle of Canandaigua in which American General George Washington were victorious. The fort continued to serve as a military installation until it closed in 1828. After the closure of Fort Niagara, soldiers from other posts began to arrive in Glens Falls and some started Families that would live here for generations. One such family is the McMahon’s who are responsible for most of present day Glens Falls’ military history. Starting with Captain John McMahon who served as an officer at Fort Niagara from 1798-1802, there have been many others who have taken up arms inGlens Falls over time including officers and enlisted men from both sides of the Revolutionary War fought here between 1792-1800 inclusive. In 1796, Major General James Montgomery arrived with his forces to help quell a local uprising led by Alexander Hamilton which had occurred due to economic grievances among residents on Long Island Sound. After driving out the rebels, Montgomery returned home but left behind a garrison of 1,500 men under his command at Gibraltar Point on Long Island Sound (later called Battery Rock). This unit remained inactive until September 25th, 1800 when it relieved Captain Cook’s squadron off Staten Island during their annual exploration mission into New York Harbor. Back at Gibraltar Point, Major General James Montgomery ordered two cannons loaded with ballast and set sail for Staten Island where they disembarked on October 15th 1800 and immediately began fireside chats with Governor Clinton about their proposed expedition against British forces located on Long Island Sound! The cannon fire signified America’s entry into World War 1! It wasn’t until November 2nd 1800 that hostilities erupted when HMS Warrior attacked Spanish fishing boats anchored off Block Island within sight of Staten Island!! A flagrant violation of international agreements forbid any aggressive action by war vessels within Greek or Spanish territorial waters!!! The ensuing battle resulted in three prizes being seized along with 20 Spaniards killed and six captured!! A victory worth celebrating given Spain had been harassing American fishermen since 1608!!! This event helped solidify America’s claim to be “the Dominions without borders!” And also demonstrated just how important maritime trade was during this period!!!!! As one commentator put it: “the capture by our side not only gained us control over these waters but added further evidence that we were no longer subject to punishment or tribute from Spain!!!!!!!" Unfortunately for Spain; this battle marked their last successful attempt against American ships inside their own territorial waters!!! Finally putting an end to any hopes they may have harbored towards reopening negotiations!!! captain john mcmahon

Glens Falls, New York is a small village located in central New York. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. Covering an area of just over 2 square miles, Glens Falls is the smallest of the five towns in upstate New York that make up Seneca County. The first humans to live in what is now Glens Falls were hunters and gatherers who traveled downriver from the Finger Lakes region during the early Pleistocene epoch. By 10,000 BC there were villages located along the lower Mohawk River. During its earliest days as a settlement, Glens Falls was known as "Hollow Point". Itoriginally consisted of a few log cabins perched atop high hills overlooking the river and its tributaries. The name was changed in 1814 when General Israel Putnam developed land adjacent to what is today downtown for his personal use and named it after himself – Glens Falls Village or "Gleason'sburgh." Putnam's main home still stands within walking distance of downtown today. In 1827, United States Senator James Buchanan purchased extensive property on which he built one of NY State's first brick buildings – then called "Buchanan House" – now part of the Capitol Building complex. He also constructed a large barn on this property which served as his official residence until 1840 when he moved into his final house inside present-day Albany Square (now within sight of City Hall). This period saw many key developments in Glens Falls including: establishment of an agricultural society; founding of two schools; construction of several churches; arrival by boat/steamboat of some twenty thousand Europeans who would later call Glens Fall their new home; development both commercial and residential areas including Plaza Street between Main Street and Webster Avenue where most residents lived until recently… Additionally much important infrastructure such as water mains were installed during this time including: first streetlight at Genesee Street corner with Main Street; first schoolhouse on Elmira Road opposite Elmira High School today’s [Old] Post Office building – all while those responsibleiledately worked behind closed doors to ensure these projects proceeded without incident or public outcry!glenfallsvillagehistory
