Gloversville, New York is a small town in the northern corner of Sullivan County, New York. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of the Susquehanna River. The first settler in what is now Gloversville was Nicholas Glover, who arrived there in 1784. The town was named after Glover's farmstead on the Susquehanna River. In 1825, the village of Gloversville became part of Sullivan County and its post office continued to be called Gloversville until it closed on July 14, 1951. The current name for Gloversville isakes its distinction from other towns in Sullivan County which were also named after families or estates: Greenport (1837), Northampton (1849), Kingston (1853), Norwich (1901) and Easton (1911). According to one source, a mill at what is now known as Beginnings Road was built about 1800 by Alexander Cameron and another by David Ramsay. By 1824, William & John McCloskey had erected a gristmill that operated until 1827 when it went out of business due to lack of demand from local farmers. A log saw mill was built about 1830 by Ebenezer Higgins but it failed to meet production quotas set by Clinton Manufacturing Company so it stopped operating around 1840-45; this mill has been lost to time and neglect but some remnants remain today as an exhibit at Clinton National Historical Park south of Bethlehem PA.. By 1860, there were only six people living in Gloversville; four men and two women working for Samuel Smiths & Sons merchants store located on Main Street. A brick factory was erected near present day Beginnings Road in 1869-70 by James Winton but again did not meet production quotas set by Clinton Manufacturing Company so it stopped operating around 1850-60; this brick factory has been lost to time and neglect but some remnants remain today as an exhibit at Clinton National Historical Park south of Bethlehem PA.. A gristmill belonging to Ephraim Best situated just east of present day First Avenue opened up circa 1830 with threefeeding power into a large water wheel that turned a hand crank for grinding corn; this mill still exists today as an exhibit at Ulster Agricultural Museum located outside West Orange NJ.. In 1857-58 silver dollars were coined here under guidance from George Stephenson using slag off Hardensburg ore mined nearby.. Gloversville was founded by William Glover in 1792. The town is located in Monroe County, New York, and became a part of the United States in 1795. It was named for James Glover, one of the original settlers. The town had a population of around 100 people by 1810, but it decreased to about 10 people by 1830. However, it increased to over 100 people by 1840 due to the arrival of new settlers and the growth of lumber production. By 1860, Gloversville had a population of approximately 150 people. However, its population decreased again after 1870 due to the loss of jobs in nearby Utica and Rochester. In 1885, Gloversville merged with neighboring Loudonville into one municipality. The municipal government changed again in 1905 when Gloversville annexed the adjacent village of East Aurora. In 1916, Gloversville lost its incorporated status and became an unincorporated community under state law. It has since regained its incorporation status and has had a population exceeding 200 people ever since.
