The Gloversville National Guard was organized on December 8th, 1917. The original goal of the guard was to provide security for theglovesville area during World War I. The first soldiers were recruited from the local militia and townspeople. The reformed Gloversville National Guard was given their own barracks in 1921 and a permanent home on State Road 13 in 1923. The guard has always played an important role in the community and its history is reflective of that fact. In 1944, when New York’s statehood was being considered, the Gloversville National Guard raised money to support the cause. After New York became a state, the unit furnished guards at various sites around the state including Albany, Buffalo and Syracuse. Today, there are over 1,000 members of the national guard present inGloversville- providing law enforcement services as well as emotional support for families during funerals and other major events. The unit's history can be traced back to the Gloversville Volunteer Fire Department, which formed in 1892. The volunteer department was soon joined by the Gloversville Police Department, and in 1907 the two departments united to form a single agency known as the Gloversville National Guard. Today, the Gloversville National Guard provides law enforcement and support services to a population of over 100,000 people including 9 detachments that serve within New York State. The unit also conducts numerous parades throughout the year commemorating military veterans from local area who have served our nation during World War II, Korean War, Vietnam Era and other eras.
Gloversville, New York is a small village located in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 576 at the 2010 census. It lies on the east bank of the Mohawk River. The village is named after Job Glovers, who donated land to the town in 1824. The Village of Gloversville was created from parts of two other villages- West Seneca and East Seneca- on July 1, 1824 by an act of the New York State Legislature. One reason for creating this new village was to provide more space for people living along the riverbanks which were constantly being filled with goods transported downriver by boat or wagon. On November 16, 1828, a store and warehouse called "the Globe" burned down in what is now known as Prospect Park. This event caused a great deal of excitement in Gloversville because it showed that there was still some demand for goods coming out of Fort Niagara and Buffalo. One of the first things that settlers did when they arrived in Gloversville was build a church which stands today on Main Street. Reverend Ebenezer Higginson built the church between 1830 and 1832. At first it functioned as just a house; however, over time it became one of the most important buildings in Gloversville because it served as both a meeting place for local farmers and also as an educational center for early residents. In 1840, Reverend Higginson also erected another important building- the schoolhouse- which still stands today! In order to support its growing population, Gloversville began to develop its own infrastructure such as schools and churches which helped ensure that everyone had access to education and healthcare needs during those early years when much emphasis was placed upon providing these services through private enterprise rather than government hands!

The town of Gloversville, New York was first settled in 1795 by Major General Israel Putnam and his wife Deborah. The name derived from the Indian word "Glovers" which means to fill up or overflowing. By 1800, the young town had a population of five hundred people. In 1814, David Glover founded the flour mill in Gloversville and soon began producing high quality flour for New York City marketplaces. The mill continued to operate until 1922 when it was closed due to economic conditions. During the American Revolution, Gloversville sided with the British side and during the war helped supply munitions to Manhattan. After the war, many farmers in Gloversville relocated to nearby Loudon County because of low prices for agricultural products brought about by European technological advances at that time. In 1847, William Ransom donated land for a school in Gloversville and construction began on what would become one of America's first public schools. The school opened in 1850 and served as a model for similar institutions throughout New York State. In 1892, David Glover donated land forGlover's Hospital which became one of America's leading healthcare facilities today In 1916-1917, World War I caused significant damage to Gloversville businesses including mills and homes; however Glover's Mill reopened two months later with significantly less damage than originally thought In 1919-1920, while New York City was undergoing its great social revolution led by Lenin and Trotsky,Gloverstown experienced almost complete destruction as mobs burned down local businesses including stores run by African Americans In 1921-1922 both mills were closed due to high costs associated with wartime production Since then there has been sporadic use of these two former gloucesvilentries but they have both been used primarily as playgrounds by locals with occasional visits from tourists Today much of what once made upglovesvilenew york history remains unchanged such as main street named after Davide Glover which is still home to several small businesses including a bakery and an ice cream parlor
