Gloversville is a small town in upstate New York, located on the eastern bank of the river Seneca. The population was 1,296 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Gloversville were Dutch farmers and traders who evangelized for Protestant Christianity in this area in 1614. In 1757, Captain John Glover sailed downriver from Kingston on Long Island and landed at what is now Gloversville after spending two months exploring the new land. He named it for his friend and business associate James Glover (1636-1705), who had accompanied him on this journey. In 1798, Colonel Nicholas Hennepin opened a fur trading post at present-dayGloverville which became one of the most important posts along the Hudson River system. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson crossed overland from Buffalo Valley to Governors Island while campaigning against General Anthony Wayne during the War of 1812 and stopped at Hennepin's post for supplies before continuing his campaign across Lake Erie. In 1825, development began in Gloversville when Major George Wright established a sawmill here that would be an important factor in helping to revive trade along the river with itsilk Because there was no navigable waterway connecting Albany and Buffalo Bayou downstream, wagonloads of goods had to be transported by boat upriver each season from those cities. 1 Gloversville residents lost their lives as a result of yellow fever epidemics that struck both Buffalo and Rochester during1819-20; however it wasn't until after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation that people realized just how serious these diseases could become given enough exposure/contamination. The town prospered through World War II with access to military bases such as Fort Drum where aircraft were built and repaired; however due to modern transportation technologies things have changed again with an increase in traffic on I‑95 nears town limits making life difficult for locals..
