It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The CDP includes the villages of Harrison and Dunkirk. The area now known as Harrison was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624 as "Haarlemmerdam". In 1785, the town of Dunkirk was organized from parts of Harrison and other nearby villages.
