During World War II, local members ofthe United States Navy served on board HMS Victory (CV-19) as gunnery officers aboard her destroyer USS Cook (DD-811). These sailors had access to many confiscated Japanese weapons that had been taken while fighting in Japan throughout World War II. One such weapon was an M1 Garand rifle that had been collected by Lieutenant Commander Harry Aiken during his service aboard Cooks predecessor USS Constitution (CV-12). lieutenant commander Aiken offered these rifles for sale at various military fairs throughout America before he sold them to civilians after the war ended. From here on out, these rifles would become part of Gun History Museum's inventory!
