Hempstead, New York is a town in Rockland County, New York, United States. The population was 11,624 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. The history of Hempstead and its military deployment gift history can be traced back to World War II. In 1941, Hempstead became the first municipality in Rockland County to become an incorporated town when Rockland County was created from portions of Westchester and Lee counties. As a result of this incorporation, Hempstead had jurisdiction over all of what is now Rockland and Nassau Counties. During World War II, Hempstead played an important role in the war effort by providing goods and services to both the United States government and our Allies. In particular, Hempstead made contributions to the war effort through its production of munitions such as aircraft engines and tanks (the latter being used by the British). Additionally, during World War II Hempstedians donated items such as clothes and household objects to various charities throughout the world. Today, many people in Hempstead remember their military service days from World War II with memories of patriotic displays or simply enjoying local food and drinks while honoring those who have served our country before us. One popular tradition that has continued for decades is "Hempstead5th" which occurs every 5th Saturday in May; this event celebrates veterans' stories, photos and artwork about their experiences in WWII as well as any lingering feelings about that time period. Hempstead is a small town in Monroe County, New York, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. Hempstead is located on the east side of the Hudson River. It is bordered by South Deerfield to the south and east, Westchester County to the north, and Islip Township to the west. The town was first settled in 1786 by Ensign Nicholas Hempstead and his wife Anna Griggs from Hartfordshire, England. The name "Hempstead" derived from early Dutch word hemlaas meaning "haystack". In 1814, residents of nearby Westchester County petitioned for incorporation as Hempstead Township; but this request was denied because there were already too many villages in that county. Hempstead became a full town on July 1, 1918 when it merged with neighboring Islip Township. On November 15 of that year, voters approved a proposal to rename the town after Frederick Douglass because he had played an important role in achieving racial equality through activism and public speaking. Hempstead's economy primarily depends on agriculture although some businesses do provide services such as transportation or marketing materials for local farmers markets. There are also several small business owners who provide goods or services not related to farming but which are popular within their community or nearby towns/cities (e.g., cleaning/maintenance services). Hempstead is a small, rural town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Hempstead was founded in 1795 by Nicholas de Weese and became a town in 1821. The name of the town comes from the local hemp plant found there. The first settler in Hempstead was Nicholas de Weese who arrived on October 6th, 1795. De Weese built a cabin on the west side of what is now Main Street and named his property "Hempstead". In 1821 Hempstead became a town under the terms of an act of Congress. It had a population of 582 at the 2000 census. In 1830 John Purdy established himself as a manufacturer of hoes and other tools near what is now Elmira Road and Main Street; he also offered for sale land for farming purposes along present-day Elmira Road. A post office called Hempstead was established here on December 12th, 1830, and continued to be used until 1902. Hempstead's early history can be traced back to when Nicholas de Weese set up shop here to produce hemp seed for export to England from his farm near today's Jericho Turnpike junction (now part of I-86). This important endeavor helped spur development in this sleepy corner of Ulster County as people began to arrive looking for rich farmland with plenty of crops that could be grown without aid from Mother Nature. Today you can still find some evidence of these pioneer days including an old blacksmith shop which still stands across from the elementary school located off Old Dutch Rd., just past Route 22nd Street (today known as Elmira Road).
