The town was founded by the Dutch in 1614 as a trading post on the north side of the Mohawk River. Ithaca was renamed to its current name of Ithaca in 1817 after Cornell University, which at that time was located in Geneva, New York. In 1903, Ithaca became an incorporated city and has since been one of the most vibrant and diverse communities in upstate New York. The history of Ithaca can be traced back to its founding as a trading post by the Dutch. The area where Ithaca now stands was home to many Native American tribes and their villages before Europeans began settling here in 1614. The first European settlement in what is now Ithaca took place when Englishman John Hanway arrived here from England with his family in 1624. He founded a small farm called Nether Hall on present day State Street near Interstate 87. Over time, other settlers came to this area and developed successful businesses including farming, manufacturing, trade goods shipping, lumbering and other ventures. In 1817, following the establishment of Cornell University by Ezra Cornell within Geneva village (then part of Albany), Ithaca became one of the towns within New YorkState which had become associated with that institution. It would remain so until 1953 when it seceded from New York State and adopted its current name around that time - something that has continued uninterrupted ever since! As one of America’s oldest university towns –credited with having been “the cradle”of higher education west of Pennsylvania –Ithacanians have long played an important rolein shaping both local culture and statewide politics throughout much of Upstate New York during challenging times: through their contributions to civic activism (such as spearheading efforts for student protests against tuition hikes at then-Universities System colleges) as well as their unwavering support for public education values such as open inquiry and creativity; while also demonstrating unyielding resistanceto any form or manifestationof cultural censorship or social engineering!
