The NYPD gift history goes back to 1849 when the department's first constable, John Fitzpatrick, received a watch from ambitious Mayor Fernando Wood. In 1865, Police Commissioner Cornelius Vanderbilt donated a horse-drawn carriage with two seats and four wheels for Constables Charles Sweeney and John Burt. In 1876, Captain James Fenton presented the first police bicycle to Sergeant George Gould at the request of Mayor Abram Dutchess. The bike was used until 1912 when it was replaced by an electric bike. From 1916-1927, Detectives Albert Einstein and Julius Rosenbach were given bicycles for their use in patrol. In 1933, Detective Joseph Hynes was given a motorcycle for his service as Patrolman No. 3 on the Brooklyn Bridge Squad. On July 20th of that year, Detectives Harry Benson and Bernard Condon were also given motorcycles for their services on patrol throughout the city during the depression years. On September 12th of that year, Sergeant Maurice Geiger was given his own motorcycle which he kept until his death in 1949. On December 1st of that year, Constable Edward Jenssenreceived his very first motorized police car – a Ford Model T – which he drove around town on while serving as Patrolman No 5 on Christopher Street between Houston and Broadway Streets in Jamaica Plain. That same year also saw the inauguration of Inspector William Byrnes as New York City's second superintendent of police after resignation of Arthur Conan Doyle Jr.. Byrnes presentation included an official appropriation from Governor Peconny to finance new equipment including six cars (three officers each) equipped with automatic lights and sirens along with twelve motorcycles which would be used for undercover operations only). In 1951 Commissioner William Jealous gave control over all vehicular traffic within NYPD territory to Commander Raymond McGrath who became responsible for all Traffic Enforcement within Manhattan except For Boroughs Brooklyn And Queens where they continued under Control Of The Borough President upto 1955 when this power vested In The Chief of Police Under Article XII Of The New York State Constitution’* [*This provision has been amended several times since its inception]
Ithaca, New York is a small town in upstate New York and the seat of Ithaca County. It is located on the eastern border of the Finger Lakes region and is bordered by the towns of North Syracuse and South Ithaca on the north, Broome on the east, Auburn on the south, and Allanake Lake on the west. The population was 27,653 as of 2010. The town has been inhabited for more than 900 years. The first inhabitants of what is now Ithaca were Native Americans who lived near present-day Albany. In 1614, English colonists arrived in what is now Ithaca to build a new capital at Albany. They called their new settlement "Ithaqua". In 1625, King Charles II granted land to three men – John Dongan, William Dongan, and Nicholas Hyacinth – to become landlords over part ofpresent-day Ithaca Township. The men built a house known as Old South Castle (now First United Methodist Church) to serve as their headquarters. The colony declined after its founding because it was too far from potential markets in England and because there was no water power available for mills or other enterprises. In 1713, during King George's War with France (1712-1715), British troops burned down part of Dongan Manor which lay within present-day Ithaca Township boundaries. This episode is considered one of the earliest examples of civilian military engagement in upstate New York history. After that war ended, Britain agreed to cede all claims to Iroquois land within present-day UPennsylvania County including much of what is now Ithica Township except for some parcels that still remain private property under Canadian control today
Ithaca is a town in New York state, United States. The population was 37,545 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in upstate New York after Syracuse and takes up much of the eastern side of the Chenango Valley. It lies on the southern shore of Cayuga Lake and is bordered by Scranton to the north, Ithaca to the east, Auburn to the south, and Rome to the west. The first Europeans to visit Ithaca were Dutch traders in 1614-1615 who named it "Ticonderoga". A small Indian village was located near present-day Ithaca but no permanent European settlement resulted until 1776 when James Clinton founded a trading post on an island in Cayuga Lake called Clinton Island. The growth of Ithaca into a town began with its incorporation as a village on April 14, 1847 following an act of Congress granted for this purpose by Ulysses S. Grant during his presidential term as President of America. After years of effort by local residents, including George Mifflin (the founder and first mayor), Ithaca became an incorporated city on January 1, 1907 under New York City law. Ithaca's rich cultural history has been represented through festivals such as Fairest Of All Fairies (August), International Folk Festival (October/November), Shakespeare In The Park (April), Cornell University's Great Performances series (May–June), Music For Plains People series (July/August) and many more events annually throughout August & September!
