The Coast Guard in Johnson City, New York was established on December 12, 1892. The original Coast Guard station in the town was located at the Hook and Ladder Company Warehouse. The first commanding officer of the Coast Guard Station in Johnson City was Lieutenant Colonel John Fenton. In 1923, the Commandant of the Coast Guard Station received a gift from Mrs. Gertrude Vanderbilt Bingham which consisted of a tugboat and boat dock used for services around town. Johnson City is a small town in the rural Unincorporated County of Greene, New York, United States. The population was 681 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany–Schenectady, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Johnson City was founded by Yankees who were on their way to Mexico when they stopped at an old logging camp on the Genesee River in 1796. The post office was established there in 1801 and became known as Johnson City. The town was named for General John Pemberton, who helped lead American forces against Mexican forces during the Texas Revolution. The first settler in Johnson City was Nicholas Joicey and his family in 1805. There were also settlers from upstate New York and Canada until about 1830 when most of the native Indian people had been killed or driven away by white settlers. In 1828, a log cabin was built by George Stephenson for himself and his wife Rebecca Stephenson near what is now downtown Johnson City. This became one of the earliest buildings in town which still stands todaybelieved to be original to the site. From about 1830 until 1840, many local farmers grew corn and other crops while doing business out of their homes; however most residents then got involved with manufacturing businesses such as shoe stores and saddlers' shops that started up around 1840-45 along Battery Street north of present day Main Street because transportation wasn't then very good between Albany and Johnson City (the only access point being downriver at Buffalo). By 1850, retail sales made up almost all business activity with only a few farming families remaining active; this changed with railroad construction through town starting in 1865 which allowed more development outside of downtown but also led to increased traffic congestion inside/around downtown due to new businesses opening up along Route 9A (now State Route 522) close to where Interstate 90 meets I-90 southbound/northbound lanes). Industry declined after World War II but revived around 1990 when much larger companies moved into towns like Syracuse (New York) so industry closed again but some remain today including two Sheet Metal Workers Local Union No 2 (SMLU2), Carrier Corporation Headquarters Building located on Main Street just east of I-90 eastbound lanes across from Carrier Corp., now home to several restaurants including A&P Foods store opposite State Route 522 mouth of Main Street from previous location occupied by Sheet Metal Workers Local Union No 1 local since 1915 before that as well as Oneida County Courthouse next door once used by Oneida County Sheriff's Department & current headquarters for Carpenters Union Local Number 45
