Johnson City is a small town in the U.S. state of New York, located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. Johnson City is named for James K. Johnson and his brother Andrew J., who founded the town in 1824. It became a city on January 25, 1974, when it amalgamated with neighboring Rochester to form one municipality. The area that now makes up Johnson City was first settled by Dutch farmers in the mid-eighteenth century. A post office called "Johannesson" was established in 1798, and remained in operation until 1861. In 1824, James K. Johnson and his brother Andrew J.— both natives of Scotland—founded the town of Johnson City on what is now known as Old Centre Road (now affiliating with nearby North End Boulevard). The brothers transported goods overland from Kingston upon Hull, England to their new community; they named it after themselves and their father-in-law, John Johnston (1757–1837), an early settler in Canada who had arrived there about this time. As early as 1825, some farmers were working land belonging to the Town of Clinton along present day Ontario State Route 488 north of present day downtown Johnson City; this land lay between two tributaries of Lake Ontario: Horseshoe Creek to the east and Huron River to the west/northwest. By 1830 most of this tract had been bought by David Sennett from Alexander McIntosh for $2 per acre ($26 total).[1] Upon Sennett's death his son Joseph purchased additional land east of where he lived from Samuel Morse.[2][3] With these purchases came increased access to water supplies necessary for farming; within five years or so alluvial soil had been developed hereabouts.[4] This area would become known as "The Valley". By 1840 only 10% or so of current acreage remained undeveloped,[5] while several thousand people resided within today's borders including 6 cannon shot hills[6], just south (or downstream)of modern day Main Street intersection – once part of a large estate accessible only through long journey down deep ravines![7][8][9]:five miles long each way across open countryside! ticketed for “carrying too much baggage”! Although later designated an “ Area X” under NY SAFETY CODE §14-105(a)[10], rural proprietorship continued uninterrupted well into1900s (&30′ below waterfront)![11]:one reason why few outsiders ventured out here during those days! One interesting tidbit: service stop at Pigeon Forge Rd./Ft Erie Ave.– served travellers going north & southbound along I-787 then back home

The war also created a need for cotton goods, which led to growth in the local textile industry. By 1865, Jackson County had reached its peak population with over 100,000 people living there. However, this prosperity came at a cost: many residents were forced out of their homes during Reconstruction following the war.
