Kingston, New York is a small town located in the Finger Lakes region of New York. The population was 5,613 at the 2010 census. Kingston is one of two towns in Genesee County that are both part of the Rochester metropolitan area. The village of Kingston was first settled by farmers in 1793. It began to grow as a commercial center after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825. The town emerged as a major industrial and retail center during the early 20th century, thanks to its access to coal and other resources. By 1950, however, Kingston had lost much of its economic significance due to changes in transportation and industry patterns. Today, Kingston remains an important community with strong cultural ties to its neighbor across the river in downtown Rochester. The town has also maintained a significant role within regional politics, hosting several local government offices as well as more than one school district headquarters since 2000.
Kingston, New York was a small town in upstate New York until the mid-19th century. It is now a census-designated place (CDP) in Ulster County, New York. The population of Kingston at the 2010 census was 18,611. The first people to live in what is now Kingston were the Lenape Indians. They called it "Khanoukantucket" because they thought it would be easy for them to trade with other Indian tribes and get goods they couldn't produce themselves. The first white person to live in Kingston was John Day who arrived there in 1776. In 1801, Captain Isaac Roberts landed there with his American Squadron and platted what is now Kingston on June 10, 1801 as part of the treaty that ended the War of 1812. In 1830, during Andrew Jackson's presidency, he issued an executive order ordering all public land east of the Ohio River to be taken from the Cherokee Nation and given to settlers from New England. This event is known as Executive Order 3235 or "the Cherokee Removal Act". As a result of this order, about 8% of the Town's land area became unusable for farming due to changes in soil types caused by heavy logging over years ago when much of present day Kingston was swampy and covered with bogs. By 1840 only 2 buildings remained standing on Main Street: The Methodist Episcopal Church (built around 1800) and Elijah Price's grocery store which had been founded earlier that year by Elijah Price Jr., one of four brothers who ran Price’s Grocery Store on Clinton Street between Washington Boulevard and Broadway near today’s Albany Avenue). These two structures were replaced by frame houses in 1865 when Main Street was widened into an arterial road typical in upstateNewYork at that time Kingston began its growth as a small town after being incorporated as a village on November 3rd OF 1909 under Wm Halleck’s governor general act #5354; later renamed Kingsport on October 1st OF 1916 In 1916 Kingston became one community within newly created Ulster County when parts of Chemung County were annexed into that county following an election held upon recommendation by Governor General James Mudd .
