Kingston, New York is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of central New York. It is one of the oldest towns in the area, and its history dates back to 1764 when it was part of British colonial territory. The town was renamed Kingston after General James Wolfe's victory at the Battle of Monmouth on June 14, 1776. The first military gift to Kingston was a cannon from France in 1810. The town also received artillery cannons from Great Britain in 1816 and 1828. The first local armory was built in 1830 and served as the headquarters for the militia until 1865. The town was named for General James Wilkinson who fought in the American Revolutionary War and was rewarded with land in what is now Kingston. The first settler in Kingston was Captain John Hawkins who arrived there on July 4, 1779 with his family from Rhode Island. He surveyed the area that would become Kingston back then called "Nansehatchee". In 1784, Major George Clinton founded an estate here called Clinton Manor which still stands today. A year later, he sold 3/4 of his land to Colonel Robert Livingston for $1,500 cash and took home $10 per acre of what would eventually become Kingston Township. In 1802, Jefferson Davis became President of the United States and ordered all U.S Treaties null and void because they did not recognize the new government created by America's victory over Great Britain in the revolutionary war. This led to a series of wars between Great Britain and America as each country tried to reestablish its dominance over North America. On October 25th of that year (the day after Thanksgiving), General Wilkinson marched into Kingston to demand recognition from Ulysses S Grant as commander-in-chief of all Union forces northwest of Philadelphia General Wilkinson's demands were met without incident but when he returned home it was discovered that he had lost most or all his possessions during his march into town In 1814 Town Meeting voted to change their name from "Nansehatchee" to "Kingston" after General James Wilkinson's memory was honored by this move After years of development by various farmers and developers alike Kingston attained its present state as a village on December 14th 1870 when it split off from Clinton Manor due primarily to lack of water resources unavailable throughClinton Manor boundaries

Kingston is a small town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The population was 2,481 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–on-Hudson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kingston was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624 and became part of Albany County in 1784. In 1814, it became part of the newly created Erie Canal Zone. The history of Kingston begins with its earliest recorded settler, Pieter van der Kempthorne, who arrived in 1624 from Rotterdam and named his new town after his patron saint, Johannes Christiaan Kolbeus. He built a log cabin on what is now Queen's Road and later developed an agricultural business which he sold to others including Nicholas Herkimer and Jacob de Vries. In 1784, Albany County was divided into two parts: One portion included Kingston as well as the towns of Rome (now Amherst), Watertown (now East Aurora), Northampton (now Lancaster), Bolton (now West Seneca) and Schenectady; while the other consisted only of Buffalo Township. The residents in Buffalo Township voted to secede from Albany County to form their own county within New York State on November 7th, 1814. On January 1st, 1815 the new county was renamed Niagara County; however Kingston remained within it until 1899 when it too became a part of Erie Canal Zone
