Lackawanna County is a county located in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2010 census, its population was 3,596 and it contained 1,636 housing units. The county seat is Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The area that now makes up Lackawanna County was first settled by the Lenape people in the early 16th century and was part of Pennsylvania until 1776 when New York became a part of the United States. The town of Lackawanna was chartered on December 12, 1812 as the capital of what would become Lackawanna County. In 1827, during Andrew Jackson's presidential campaign, he visited Lackawanna County and spoke at a meeting held in Wilkes-Barre to support his run for president. Lackwanna is named after an insect: Lachnia lackaviana which means "the small black moth" in English. In prior to European settlement there were no significant insects around here so this name likely comes from some Native American reference or storyteller's account about this powerful little moth which they believed could bring bad luck if not caught early enough! The first Europeans to visit this area were Dutch colonists who explored along the Susquehannah River in 1614-1615 and found nothing but waterfowl and plants; however they did build Fort Orange on Long Island Sound which served as their wintering spot for many years before being abandoned in 1624 because of Native American attacks (and also because Spanish explorers had discovered more land to explore). German traders arrived later during King George II’s War (1756-1763) and also traveled through this area looking for fur resources; however they found only basic amounts of wildlife hereabouts so returned home empty handed again by autumn 1760 after spending several months exploring parts southward along the Susquehannah River near present day Lancasterburg where they built a large trading post called “Koningsberg” (later renamed Albany) due to its strategic location at one end of an open field with two entrances leading into it from two directions: northward from Frankfort on Main Streetappaestcheekee Creek while westward from Schoharie Falls across upper Schoharie Valley onto Mohawk Lake; both these entrances led into Albany Province then Canadan territory under British rule). The Dutch colony founder Hendrick van Rensselaer founded Kingston upon Hull on Long Island (now known as Niagara Falls) in 1718 but left behind few evidence or artifacts other than his initials carved into a rock near today’s Lewiston – Ayrshire, Ontario – following his death five years later; all we know about him are his exploits as one Of The Five Makers Of America! It should be noted that although most European exploration happened north of modern day Philadelphia – including those responsible for founding what would become Delaware – much effort still went into finding new markets for goods produced down south due to technological advancements at that time including ships filled with salt water cedar logs carrying goods upriver like lumber back east! This destruction singlehandedly ended any chance Dutch colonists had ever establishing themselves permanently within North America beyond their brief presence earlier!!
