The Lackawanna Naval Shipyard was founded in 1894 by Rear Admiral George W. Smith, who served as the first Commander in Chief of the Navy. The yards produced warships for both the United States and Great Britain. In 1923, theyards were sold to Bethlehem Steel Company and became part of that company’s Bethlehem-Fremont Division. In 1945, the shipyards were merged into General Dynamics Corporation and remain a part of that company today. The shipyards have produced more than 1,500 ships during their history, including submarines, destroyers, patrol boats and supply vessels. Many of these vessels have been used in various conflicts around the world. Naval ships are one of America’s most important symbols and symbols of her international stature. The Lackawanna Naval Militia was created in 1795 by order of Commodore John Graves Simcoe. The militia started as a coastal defense force, but soon became an all-volunteer military. In 1824, the navy purchased land at Buffalo Bay on the eastern side of Long Island for use as a naval depot and barracks. The navy used Buffalo Bay until 1827, when it moved to Hunters Point on the Brooklyn waterfront. In 1830, Commodore Amos Kendall ordered that all volunteer navy ships be converted into warships. The conversion process was slow and expensive, so only ten warships were completed before Kendall resigned in 1833. In 1840, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt ordered that all navy vessels be turned into merchant ships. This conversion process was also slow and expensive, so only twenty-one merchant ships were completed before Vanderbilt resigned in 1844. In 1850, Commodore David Dixon placed an order for fifty warships from French shipyards. However, the project was cancelled due to financial difficulties. In 1854, Commodore David Dixon placed an order for seventy-six warships from British shipyards. However, the project was cancelled because of financial problems again.
Lackawanna is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 5,592 at the 2010 census. Lackawanna is the most populous town in Erie County and the second-most populous town in New York State after Manhattan. It has a land area of 18 square miles (46 square kilometers). The town is bordered by Scranton to the north, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to the east, and Hamburg to the south. According to the United States Census Bureau, Lackawanna has a total population of 5,592 living within its limits as of 2010. This makes it one of only two towns in New York State with over 6,000 residents -the other being Syracuse - making it an important agricultural center. The first settlement in what is now Lackawanna was made on October 8th 1792 by Nicholas Mifflin and his family from Pennsylvania under charter from George Washington as "Dalmatia". On November 1st 1792 Ephraim Huntington founded "Huntington's Ferry" across Schuylkill River from what is now Lackawanna On December 12th 1800 John Cushman set up an ferry service between Easton and Huntingdon Landing on Delaware Bay which became known as Cushman's Ferry because he operated it. On January 15th 1802 James White established a ferry service across Schuylkill River known as Whites Ferry which became known as White's Ferry because white settlers used it for transportation purposes only; they did not reside there permanently until 1830 when they erected a cabin and started farming there.. In 1809 David Ross established "Ross' Tavern", later called simply Ross' Tavern & Post Office., on what are now Lynchburg Road near present day Old Mills Road about four miles south of where today's Rossville lies In 1812 Daniel Dennison organized "Dennison's Valley" west of present day Kensington Township line along Canisteo Creek including much or all of modern Lackawannan township except for parts located southeast of that township line adjacent to present day Bethlehem Steel Plant

Additionally, between 1861 and 1873, navies began using steamboats for instead of sailboats when sailing into battle because steam engines gave them greater speed and range than sail engines did at that time.
