Lancaster, New York is a city located in Erie County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 33,827. The city is the county seat of Erie County and home to the University of Pennsylvania's campus. Lancaster has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years and was granted incorporation as a town in 1837. The name derived from Lancaster Township (now part of Lawrence Township), on the south side of the Saratoga River. The first successful transportation effort across what is now United States soil began with a wagon caravan led by George Washington in 1795-96. By 1800 settlers had begun moving into this area and founded what would become Lancaster township on April 25, 1802. On December 12th, 1836, William Tompkins donated land to form what would become Penn State College (later known as Penn State University). A year later it became officially incorporated as a college when its trustees voted 7-2 to make it an independent institution separate from Cornell University which at that time also occupied lands donated by Tompkins. In 1850s two other colleges were established: One opened in Philadelphia and was known as Temple; while another - Second Presbyterian Church - opened in Scranton and became affiliated with Western Union Telegraph Company after being purchased by Elisha Graybeal for $200 (). In 1861 Lancaster’s largest fire ever destroyed 1/4ths of its buildings including many homes but did not cause any loss to residents or businesses because early warning systems had saved most people within minutes before they could be evacuated from their homes! Lancaster, New York is a small town in the Hudson Valley of New York State. It lies on the border of Lancaster County and Westchester County. The population was 7,848 at the 2010 census. The town is located on Route 9W, northwest of Watertown. The first mention of Lancaster in written history is from 1614 when it was part of an area under the control of the Dutch East India Company. In 1764, John Adams moved his family there from Boston after being appointed by George Washington as justice of the peace for Lancaster County. By 1800, Lancaster had a population close to 1,000 people. In 1814-1815 Timothy Pickering led an expedition against Native Americans in what is now known as the Battle of Haverford Township; one soldier died and two were captured by Pickering's forces. In 1824, Samuel Overholt built a mill on what are now Main Street and Court Avenue in what is now downtown Lancaster. He continued to operate it until his death in 1852; it became part of the American Millinery Manufacturing Company (AMMCo). AMMCo manufactured dresses for many famous women including First Lady Dolley Madison and actresses Sarah Bernhardt and Ellen Terry. After World War II, AMMCo merged with other textile companies to form JMC Corporation which still manufactures its products today outside of North America In 1925, Lancaster became home to Pennsylvania's first National Guard Armory when Camp Creek Armory opened nearby on Pennsylvania Avenue near wherepresent-day Union Hall stands In 1954–1955 outgoing Ulysses S Grant visited both Camp Creek Armory and Penn State University before returning home via Erie Railroad Station located adjacent to present day Lincoln High School . A plaque marking that occasion can be found at that location . The name Lancaster comes from Lancaster, England and means "location where numerous flocks of sheep pastured." Lancaster was founded by English colonists in 1724 as a small community on the east shore of Lake Ontario near the present-day city of Toronto. In 1768, it became part of Albany County. In 1814 it became part of Erie County. The first post office in Lancaster was established in 1724 and served until 1800. The first store was built in 1728 by Joshua Traley at what is now its corner just south of Main Street. In 1805, James Bradford opened a general store on Delaware Avenue north of Main Street which became one of the largest stores in town for many years until it closed around 1840. In 1814, when Albany and Niagara counties were combined to form new Erie County, Lancaster's section became part of that county; but because it lay within Duffey Township (later Ontario) within Canada's boundaries its incorporation into America as a town never happened. The only building still standing from before 1800 is an old log cabin dating back to about 1792 just east of US Route 7 on State Road 11/12 called Cedar Grove House which later served as a boarding house for settlers coming overland from Ontario via the Niagara River valleys during the early days when travel across country by wagon or stage coach was very easy and hazardous;Stagecoaches stopped running between Buffalo and Toronto about 1830 so this old cabin may have been abandoned then also
